A "toy" for a 23 year man!

I need a "toy" for DS's Christmas stocking... Grin

It is a family legend that I always put something in the DC's stockings that I knew would keep the recipient amused on their own until lunchtime. It started as a way of keeping the DC occupied until we opened tree presents in the afternoon but now, even though it is entirely unnecessary, we still keep up the tradition. It's fun to have something to do once lunch is prepared and cooking.

But I have run out of ideas for DS this year. We've done a lock picking kit, a suture practice kit, a magic trick and a human anatomy colouring book in recent years. It needs to be something for one person, as the whole point is it's something to do in a quiet moment when everyone else is busy. Not a book (they get a book too) and not a jigsaw. Some other kind of puzzle or something small to construct could be good. Extra points if it has something to do with guitars or medicine!

Anyone have any suggestions?

My adult son was tidying up his room before moving out last month. He found his Rush Hour and I took him up a coffee and found him playing Rush Hour instead of packing.

If you've got a Menkind store locally I'd have a look there. Tons of toys for grown up boys.

How about a Metal Earth model kit like this one? There are hundreds of different kits available for around £10. They come on sheets of metal which you cut out, fold and attach together with tabs that you bend or twist with some tweezers. I've made a few and they are a great way to waste a few hours.

A small model kit

A nanoblocks set, if that's not too lego-like.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 12/12/2021 08:31

this

I bought for DH last year.

It's an escape room but it's all in an envelope. We had a lot of fun solving it.

Planning on getting one of there others this year

Iliketeaagain · 12/12/2021 08:39

Does he have a sibling to be involved? I found deadly diseases top trumps on Amazon this year - if there is another grown up DC to join in, it might be a fun stocking filler.

Scout2016 · 12/12/2021 08:44

Automaton kit? There's a few wooden drummer/ guitar player ones on ebay

LIZS · 12/12/2021 08:49

Airfix, lego, meccano, retro video game

VirusgonnaVirus · 12/12/2021 08:49

Thank you! Had never heard of the suture kit, have just bought one. Amazing.

TillyTopper · 12/12/2021 08:55

I also came on here to say lego or nanoblocks.

mangomama91 · 12/12/2021 08:56

You can get escape room games. I'm not sure how many players you need for it but that might be a good one to keep him busy.

Love the tradition!

@Thatsplentyjack

Sudoku rubix cube
This is what I was going to suggest
Hont1986 · 12/12/2021 09:14

Concurring with the Metal Earth kits, although you do need a small set of model-making tools to put them together. Also you can get small cardboard 3D puzzles from jigzle.co.uk in various animal designs.

Guidancillary · 12/12/2021 09:15

Drone, DeWalt tools, peace on earth are all good

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 12/12/2021 09:23

I bought this for my daughter's father in law:

Rubin cube was my first thought.

Sally872 · 12/12/2021 09:49

@chesirecat99 firebox is good for stuff like that.

Why do they have to wait until the afternoon to open presents?

chesirecat99 · 12/12/2021 11:23

That's what works best for us, @OnlyonemoresleeptilChristmas.

Family and guests arrive at midday, we have lunch and open presents together afterwards.

My DC were born teenagers and always liked a lie in so by the time we had opened stockings, had breakfast, got showered and dressed shudders at the memory of the year Santa brought headlice and I had to treat everyoneon Christmas morning, been to church, it was time to prepare lunch and the guests were arriving. There was no time for tree presents anyway. Santa always brought something to play with with cousins and siblings, something to read and something to play with alone.

They loved having 2 sets of presents, it was twice the excitement. When they were little and we had family for Boxing Day too, all the children used to save some presents for the next day. It was their idea after one year we had a guest who didn't come for Christmas Day so they got an extra present.

I think this looks great, the reviews are good too. Been debating it for BIL.
