Stocking type presents for a 75 year old man

We have admitted defeat with my FIL! He wants a new printer but won't commit to choosing one so we are going to give him a voucher towards it. This means he'll have nothing to open on Christmas Day so I thought I'd fill a box with some bits and pieces so he has something to open. So far I have a box of dates, liquorice allsorts, jelly babies, biscuits and brandy. Can anyone think of anything else generic to get an older man that has absolutely no interests!

A nice mug, hot water bottle, whiskey glass, novel or puzzle book? Maybe a jigsaw on a relevant theme? If he has any grandchildren or pets you could get a photo mug or a calendar made with their pictures. I have similar relatives who are hard to buy for!

JulesJules · 09/12/2021 22:25

We do a gift bag for my dad with things like:
Homemade chutney, marmalade, lemon curd, granola. Mini bottles red wine, prosecco.
Posh chocs, Florentines.
Crackers. Liquorice (he says the Lakeland bags are the best) Christmas nut mixture (Waitrose)

He must have some interests of he wants a printer. Printer paper and ink, as suggested would be ok. The 75 year old men I know appreciate a cardigan or jumper, as well as thermals, they are still very active.

He works still because he wouldn't know what to do with his time otherwise. Prides himself on the fact that he's only read one book cover to cover I his whole life Confused. Buys everything he needs from his Amazon account - very frustrating. Is only buying vouchers for his entire family because he can't be bothered with Christmas - but despite that he'll be disappointed if we do the same to him. He is 'difficult'!

Bamboo socks
Woollen hat
Key ring with a torch
Favourite biscuits
Jar of Gentleman’s Relish
Grooming kit for a beard if he’s got one
Decanter of port (£5 M&S)

I have 'adopted a spitfire' for a similar sounding relative. Comes in a nice box with quite a few bits to peruse. They are available from a few places online and vary in price between £15 and £20.

Chocolate truffles

Maybe a nice pen?

Bottle of nice wine/brandy/whiskey if he drinks

AlwaysLatte · 10/12/2021 01:23

Elderly people are a nightmare to buy for. Comfort is usually key - heat pad? Throw, slippers, sweater?

QuestionableMouse · 10/12/2021 01:54

I got my dad a beanie with a lamp in and he loves it. Also seems to get used a lot.

BasiliskStare · 10/12/2021 02:05

I googled and got my FIL ( sounds similar ) a locally made book for area he grew up in - with photos etc - he spent more time looking at that than the other presents.
For his 80th we got him a hamper ( we we made it up with stuff we knew he liked. )

DFIL was really hard to buy for - I can understand the problem

spotsbeforetheeyes · 10/12/2021 03:16

I think we have the same FIL, OP! Mine doesn't drink though, so we can't even do a nice bottle of something.

spotsbeforetheeyes · 10/12/2021 03:18

Would he use a calendar? A nice one with pictures of something he likes even if that's just the local area or lighthouses or cars or something.

Smellies set - shower gel and deodorant?
Scratchcard

Really nice socks! More expensive/better quality than he would choose himself (unless he’s got very expensive tastes Xmas Grin )

Celtic & Co. sheepskin slippers - so comfy and warm. My DH loves them.

If he’s still very nimble and can manage fine work with his hands, a Build-your-own radio.
