I’m looking for a gift idea under £50. What would you appreciate?

I’ve already given a compost thermometer (big hit) and a hori hori that was recommended here but received with complete bemusement.

A garden clock? There are lots on line, some quite cheap. www.bing.com/shop?q=garden+clocks+outdoor+waterproof&FORM=SHOPPA&originIGUID=0EA2439E2A35452EA70D366A86E609B7

Grumpy gardener weeder

www.greanbase.co.uk/product/weeder/
Or with a longer handle if older and doesn’t want to get down on hands and knees so much

www.greanbase.co.uk/product/cultimate-weeder-with-long-handle/

Great for getting to weeds between plants and for patios

The long nose trowels are really good as well

Slug bells are great too
www.greanbase.co.uk/product/slugbell-green/

Stops other wildlife or cats getting to the pellets and still protects from slugs eating your favourite plants.

I just bought my sister a brown turkey fig for Xmas.

I have a fan trained fig. Dsis turns up every September and looks hopefully up my garden, asking if the figs are ripe yet. Smile

Time she had her own.

Trug, decent secateurs, new perennial plant or small tree that you know they’d like, really good gardening book like RHS Encyclopedia of Gardening, annual RHS membership - lots of options!

hotfroth · 09/12/2021 21:47

A sun dial?

thelegohooverer · 09/12/2021 21:48

Thanks. Great ideas.

I’m going to have to google hori hori.

People tend to get me large terracotta pots, secateurs, or really nice gardening books - all v welcome. Boyfriend gets me a £50 national garden centre voucher which is brilliant - there isn’t much to buy now so I save it until the summer and go mad on plants and compost.

I've bought my dad an outdoor clock (I got myself one this year and it looks lovely in the seating area. Or maybe some outside lanterns? I had some gorgeous terracotta ones for my own bday. The national trust do some lovely wrought iron stakes/poles with fancy tops. I have a few stuck in my borders.

But a lovely large pot would go down v well with me too.

Billybagpuss · 10/12/2021 06:25

I want pots, people are bored of buying me pots, I won’t get any

Seed storage box
Hand cream
Hand hoe

Delphinna · 10/12/2021 12:30

Anything from Niwaki - I can recommend the gardening apron. A kneeling pad to kneel on when weeding. A photo album to store seeds in the sleeves.

Unremarkable · 10/12/2021 13:07

A hellebore. £20 for a tip to specimen in bloom for Christmas.

Anordinarymum · 10/12/2021 13:09

Secateurs. You can't have enough of them especially if they are pink !
A kneeling mat is a thoughtful present too as are really good quality gloves all of which I use regularly.

Long handled leaf grabber. £25.

I'm a gardener, and I'm horribly difficult to buy garden stuff for because either I already have it or I don't want it. But I do appreciate really good expensive versions of things and for £50 you could get something excellent.

I'd suggest

  • implementations.co.uk for copper tools, all beautiful and work brilliantly
  • Niwaki as above
  • a voucher for Crocus (very good plants) or
  • the offer of a trip to the specialist nursery of their choice with £50 to spend there
  • a really good quality plant support (proper thick steel) from somewhere like Crocus or look in a posh gardening mag

Camellia with a big pit to plant it in. Saw one in my local garden centre this week and it was ready to pop into flower. Beautiful. I wold love up.
Any pot ..the bigger the better.

thelegohooverer · 11/12/2021 01:15

Thank you all for the brilliant suggestions. I’ve opted for a beautiful seed storage box this time as they’re currently half organised and some got spoiled by damp recently.

@thelegohooverer good call but save the niwaki hori hori for next time!

Another idea that they'll appreciate is if you can gather up from people or just buy some is the little silica sachets that keep stuff dry. If they add one in between each seed packet it should avoid them getting damp.

Another thing I bought when doing my niwaki order is a kenzan flower frog - it's a little thing full of spikes to put in the bottom of a vase for flower arranging & good for th Japanese style of only having one or two things in the vase

thelegohooverer · 11/12/2021 20:05

@buckeejit I feel armed with ideas for years to come!!
