Does anyone have a decent idea for their parents?

If I had a really good idea (almost) the sky's the limit re cost but I (and they) hate spending money on stuff no one wants. So, I could spend a lot or a little, it doesn't really matter.

Late 70s, active, love their garden but in a very utilitarian WW2 way, they don't want any "luxuries" for it. Dad is quuite interested in the family history, but I've done the DNA thing previously.

I need either a token "something" either between them or separately or a really good idea(s). Please? 🙂

We love our shoes. So easy to slip on and go out to the garden easily. They’re hardy enough to wear for gardening, or even walking the dog in the summer.

I’m planning a subscription to Wild and Bloom, lovely bunch of flowers every month for 3 months. My mum won’t even eat chocolate!

I’m pleased with my gift to my mum this year - she has fancy china that she bought for their wedding. The pattern is no longer made but I have managed to source bits on eBay - to replace bits that have broken over the years. Also found some really nice bits she didn’t yet have.

I have smuggled all the old cine reels out of a cupboard at my parents and am getting them put onto a usb and dvds for them.

@WalkingOnSonshine hi sorry to jump on - that photo frame, do you need to download the pictures on to the frame or is it literally they appear on it straight away?

Just thinking for my Nan who lives a few hours away and doesn’t have a mobile phone. If they go on automatically it would be a great way to keep her in the loop with photos and things! Thanks!

Could you upgrade a few things they already have? Swap an old kindle for an iPad, buy a new coat to replace an older one? Those kinds of things typically go well with the older grumpier crowd

Are you my sister geared? Same. Struggling. Both 80. Don't want to go out or have experiences. Again, bought and not used.

I always buy food and rink which now seems boring. And have overdone the garden.

Impossible!!!!

The over 70s in my life don't want anything. I think they are genuinely offended by gifts of stuff they neither want or need and which disrupts their carefully crafted routine in anyway. I think take the hint and forget buying anymore stuff.

My elderly dad liked to sneak off for a curry without my mum occasionally, so I took him out for one last curry before he died. That's the best present I ever gave him.

If they can get to London the Shard was a really worthwhile gift experience. DP got it for his big birthday and surprisingly good.

I’ve got my old dad a bit of woodland with a certificate from the Woodland Trust. £25. Will add a bottle of champagne and box of chocolates

If they like donating to charity, how about giving a donation on their behalf to 'Toilet Twinning'? www.cord.org.uk/toilet-twinning
They will get a photo of the loo (outside in a little building) and will have the satisfaction of knowing they have really helped a poor community.
Or if they like gardening, how about one of those stools that you can flip over to make a kneeler (the legs then make handles you can use to push yourself up on)? You could also give them a subscription to a garden magazine and lots of packets of seeds?
An olive tree? My kids clubbed together to buy me a four foot one and it actually had olives on it. I was beyond thrilled!

Alexa?
Some smart gadgets for turning lights and things off and on?
A window bird feeder?
Wine?
Binoculars?
Contigo mugs for hot drinks when out and about?
A new bench?
Dedicate a bench in a favourite spot to them while they are still alive Grin

I got my mum an air plant from a lady who makes things. It’s a really lovely idea for those that have everything.

It was in a beautiful hanging glass vase thing as well.

Do you have my parents, I bought them this years ago and it's still pride of place!

I love that photo frame suggestion! We did digital photo frames for elderly relatives years ago when they first came out but it was such a hassle to keep them updated with new photos so having an app is a brilliant idea

If they really don’t want anything, a nice bottle of wine or whatever they like would be enough.

My mum also doesn’t want anything (she has downsized) so I got her a garden centre voucher. They last for a while now and she can buy something for outside or inside whenever she wants. She was surprisingly pleased about it!

This went down well when dad kept saying he wanted nothing. That’s exactly what he got.

It literally is nothing but the wording on the empty packaging is quite funny.
