Gift for someone who loves their bird feeder

Should clarify that the recipient is not actually a bird, but someone who loves watching birds on the feeder.

Pretty sure they've got a healthy stock of seed, and they bought themselves a swish motion activated camera. They've got binoculars, and plenty of books on identifying birds.

The only thing I could think to get them was a baffle to stop squirrels getting up the pole, but that seems a bit boring. Any ideas?

Some nesting boxes?

SnoopsCaliforniaRoll · 07/12/2021 12:09

Nesting boxes (maybe one with a camera fitted, if reasonably priced);
Nice bird bath (I love seeing the birds drinking and washing in mine!);
A bird-handling experience to get up close and personal with some larger/unusual birds?

Ha! Grin

Oh how about some home-made suet/fat balls (and then maybe a new holder to add to their bird feeding table/stand)? You can make them very festive in special shapes (eg wreath, Xmas tree using cookie cutters)/or with coloured ingredients like cranberries or green pistachios. The birds will also appreciate them in the Winter.

I also have some square suet block 'cages' which I hang in bushes. They are well loved by small birds, and fat wood pigeons diligently pick up the fallen crumbs. They might be a nice addition too?

There maybe other things on this site

Bird table?

Guylncognito · 07/12/2021 12:40

Thanks everyone!

@SnoopsCaliforniaRoll the festive suet ball is a lovely idea!

It's a shame all nesting box cameras are a million pounds, otherwise that would be ideal

AlCalavicci · 07/12/2021 14:19

How about a window mounted bird feeder like this www.amazon.co.uk/Window-Bird-Feeder-Suction-Cups/dp/B08HKD6CLS/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=Window+Bird+Feeder&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1638886556&sr=8-5.

Amazon ( Yeah I know not great ) have got loads ranging from around £10 to £40

I just bought an alpaca wool nesting feeder thing from Etsy. It's a feeder filled with alpaca wool that the birds can take to line their nests with. You can get wool refills too.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 07/12/2021 14:30

@SnoopsCaliforniaRoll sorry for the hi jack but do you know where that suet feeder is from? I like that it seems more protected for the little birds!
DH a twitcher and always looking for good bird presents!! Thanks

Duvetflower · 07/12/2021 14:34

a bird cake kit? www.venner-store.co.uk/products/bird-cake-kit?_pos=1&_psq=bird&_ss=e&_v=1.0

My garden birds absolutely adore Flutter butter - birds can't tolerate salt so human peanut butter is toxic for them but Flutter is salt free peanut butter. You can buy the special feeders to hold the glass jars and the birds go mad for it. If you love to bird watch then this stuff brings lots of birds to your feeders and it's really good food for them.

SnoopsCaliforniaRoll · 07/12/2021 20:36

@mumsiedarlingrevolta I know, it's lovely isn't it? Unfortunately I only have a 'standard' square Peckish feeder, rather than this particular feeder which looks better (as it is baffled / starling proof). That said, mine is only visited by sparrows and tiny birds (maybe because it is placed in a hedge), so I don't have the starling issue.

An alternative baffled (but not squirrel-proof) feeder that takes both ball and square suet cakes is this >> www.nhbs.com/guardian-fat-ball-suet-feeder

If you are on a tight budget Wilko do some cheap but pretty feeders
www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-metal-house-wild-bird-seed-nut-feeder/p/0507671
Or
www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-decorative-wild-bird-fat-ball-feeder/p/0507660
Or
www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-heart-wild-bird-fat-ball-feeder/p/0507649

File with either a bag of £1 fat balls or £2.50 bag of peanuts and you have a nice present to give.

Proudboomer · 07/12/2021 21:25

Wilko do a caged fat ball feeder for £6
www.wilko.com/en-uk/wilko-wild-bird-caged-fat-ball-feeder/p/0314648

Not much different from the nhbs £30 one.
