The older girl (was she 12?) swallowed magnets pretending to be lip piercings - like magnetic earrings.

Krimble · 17/12/2007 22:33

OK some kids are stupid , but younger kids regularly put toys in thier mouths and most small toys won't cause this sort of damage. Best restriced to older kids and kept out of reach, but hey you all know that .

Twinklemegan · 17/12/2007 22:35

I think the girl was about 7 when the incident occurred. Those weren't from toys of course, nobody seemed to know where they had come from.

Leaving aside the merits or otherwise of having these magnets in toys at all, I still don't think manufacturers can be held responsible for kids who frankly are old enough to know better. With toddlers it's different but, as WeWhizzYouAMerryXmas said, many other everyday things are also dangerous for little tots. It's a case of being vigilant as a parent.

Goodness still getting high level lead paint on fake Winnie the Pooh baby toy. Careful what you buy at the market and cheapo shops.

i missed this. haven't got any magnetix stuff but they always seemed slightly dangerous to me. also keep magnets away from tv screens, they'll suck the picture away.

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 18/12/2007 08:27

Oh dear. I am thinking maybe of taking back Ds1's magnetix set, he will be upset but I can't be that vigilant here, and Ds2 might get hold of some bits.
You wouldn't know, would you, till it was too late.

Brandnewchristmaspyjamasgirl · 18/12/2007 08:51

I'm sorry twinkly I didn't actually realise it was about magnetix when i was joking with you on the other thread!

andaRubberDuckinapeartree · 18/12/2007 09:31

I think in general the geomag are better made - there's no little magnets in the panels or balls, and the magnetic bits are whole rods (harder to swallow than just a tiny magnet that can fall out of the plastic casing).

That said, ds1 has Geomag, and I put it away for a while until ds2 was a bit bigger since the first scare. Haven't got it out again yet.

Hulababy · 18/12/2007 17:03

Best move the Magnetix out of reach so that it is supervised play only I guess. 5yo DD has a small set already and more coming for Christmas. Worried about the smaller children who come and play.

I've sorted out and thrown away ds's magnetix today, unfortunately with 2 younger dd's in and out of his room all day and finding them strewn about all over the house regularly, I just don't want to take the risk after seeing that.

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 19/12/2007 06:51

I think the set we got cheap from Argos might go back...he can have K'nex instead, I was saving it for his birthday but hey...

Brandnew, no worries!!!

Cocobear · 19/12/2007 08:49

I couldn't see the show. What toys were we warned off? Just magnetix and PP? (Prepares to chuck out the Xmas pressies...)

Hulababy · 19/12/2007 09:00

I didn't see it but I assume the PP toys that were deemed not safe are the ones that have already been recalled earlier this year - the ones with exposed magnets. Most of PP toys don't have magnets anyway.

Magnetix only a problem is swallowed - like anything with strong magnetics I suspect. But ideal o move out of reach of little ones.
