Vegan Christmas buffet ideas?

This is the first Christmas that my ds has been vegan, he's 15. I'm looking for Christmas party food, buffet style ideas that are vegan? I was wondering if anyone is also vegan and has some ideas. TIA

Do you mean like finger food, or something more substantial?

homous with crudites
falafels
vegan sausage rolls
spring rolls
breaded mushrooms
pakora

if more substantial food is needed could just do a pasta salad, tabbouleh, vegan curry.

Violife have got a vegan cheeseboard that you can serve with crackers and chutneys. They are surprisingly nice (and I say that as a non-vegan!)

Then I’d get the usual Xmas snacks - sausage rolls, spring rolls, falafel etc from the vegan party food section.

Then do some salads and dips with crisps.

I appreciate this is a question about Christmas, but for a perhaps more varied response, can I suggest asking for it to be moved to the vegan section?

You can veganise absolutely anything these days, OP. Do you want vegan versions of what you're having?

You can get vegan quiche or vegan frittata which are both great on a buffet.

I'm partial to quesadilla (made with vegan cheese- my favourite is Violife Epic mature cheddar- and spring onion).

They've just brought out a vegan version of Boursoin which would be great with crackers. You can also get a vegan Camembert that you can put in the oven to go all soft and melty. I've not tried it yet, but it looks great!

Perfect. Yes finger food :-)

Ooh Vegan Boison, yum!! I have posted on the vegan board before and you don't get much traffic on there.

Ask him if he likes violife first. I think it’s absolutely disgusting. The worst of all the vegan cheeses! They’re quite personal taste.

Nush does some really nice cheese spreads.

Lots of Indian party snacks are vegan-bhajis, samosas, pakoras etc.

It’s easy to buy vegan puff pastry (jus rol is) to make little tartlets with something like pesto or olive tapenade and antipasti from a jar.

To be honest we haven't found any vegan cheese we really like yet!

JusRol frozen pastry is vegan if you want to knock up some vegan cheese straws.

PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2021 12:10

To be honest, most vegan cheese isn’t that nice.

Maybe it would be better to focus on more naturally vegan things than the fake versions.

What does he like to eat now?

katscamel · 07/12/2021 00:19

Google the recipe for mercimek kofta.... v.lovely lentil kofta. In fact there are lots of other Turkish dishes that are vegan friendly and easy to make/buy.

KobaniDaughters · 07/12/2021 00:26

I do vegan devils on horseback at Christmas which are amazing! Stuff dates with vegan cream cheese or the violife feta (which is more like toast cheese) and wrap in this strips of grilled aubergine

SimpsonsXmasBoogie · 07/12/2021 01:05

I would stay away from vegan cheese. I have never tasted one that is actually nice. But I suppose it's personal preference.

I would do some sushi. You can make them as small as you like, and you can put pretty much anything on them.

Greytminds · 07/12/2021 01:15

The only vegan cheese that’s vaguely acceptable is the Applewood smoked cheese. That’s because it’s been given the smoked flavoring - it’s still a bit fake/plastic like the others but thankfully the coconut flavour is hidden.
Nush cream cheese is good.

Aldi have quite a bit of plant based party food type offerings as well as Christmas dinner options. Asda do a vegan salted caramel and chocolate tart that we tried this week and is great!

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/12/2021 01:23

Aldi's sweet potato pakoras are delicious. This may sound weird but my vegan friend did cocktail
'Sausages' and pineapple/tomato/cucumber on sticks - very retro and tastes great

IWentAwayIStayedAway · 07/12/2021 06:34

Marks and spencers doing lovely vegan bits. Check out plant kitchen range in fridge and freezer. Get onto 'accidentally vegan' on social media. Lots of ideas.

MrsWidgerysLodger · 07/12/2021 06:57

The plant pioneers sausage rolls (white bag in Sainsbury's freezer section) are bloody lovely. We recently had a party where some of the guests were dairy free and some veggie so had a lot of vegan food to cater to everyone and these were a big hit.

Hotcuppatea · 07/12/2021 07:02

Vegan cheese is a bit grim, but there's lots of other lovely things you could do. Samosa, vegan sausage rolls, spring rolls, little garlicky potatoes, vegan sushi.

Words · 07/12/2021 07:09

Vegan cheese tastes rank to me. Instead of buying processed stuff, agree with pp to try making a few of your own things- roast potato wedges with dips for example. Hummus, guacamole, that sort of thing?
