Hi all, my 10 year old DS is massively into space. I’m after some cool ideas on what I could get him for Christmas! Any suggestions?

I named a star for my children for a Christmas gift. It comes with co-ordinates of where it is and other paperwork.
There's diagrams etc.

I used an affectionate nickname we use and their names.
The certificate is framed on the wall. It's lovely.

What about a mini telescope? So they can star gaze? They are sold online for cheaper all the way to very expensive. But for a child a small inexpensive telescope might be nice.

There is a link for a child’s beginner telescope below.

What about this NASA telescope and future astronaut TShirt? It’s really well priced

Space items my kids have had over the years:

  • glow in the dark stars

  • phases of the moon wall light (I think its really cool, my kids arent as fussed though lol)

  • night sky projector (we had several but national geographic is the most realistic)

  • solar system poster

  • telescope (wouldn't recommend, never used and I don't know anyone whose kid has used one... they are tricky to learn to set up and use and the results are often underwhelming)

ohidoliketobe · 06/12/2021 13:19

I cannot recommend Space Detectives online workshops enough!
www.spacedetectives.com/online-live-workshops-and-presentations.html

DS (7) did workshop 1 last January and it was £65 for 6 x 1 hour weekly sessions via zoom. So interactive and engaging. The whole family got involved

Stompythedinosaur · 06/12/2021 13:20

The problem with telescopes is that cheaper ones are tricky to focus and dont give good results - it is often better to get a good pair of binoculars unless you are able to spend hundreds on a telescope.

Snozzlemaid · 06/12/2021 13:31

Tim Peake is doing a UK tour. Maybe tickets if there's a venue near you?

Pellewsmate · 09/12/2021 18:10

My son has a huge flask that I fill with hot chocolate for late night star gazing.
Reclining garden chair to get comfy
Binoculars (recommended when starting out as easier to find things than with a telescope)
Subscription to The Sky at Night magazine
Stellarium app to help him follow the night skies

Isolemnlyscare · 09/12/2021 18:20

An acre of the moon, with most of them you get a gift pack with an ownership certificate, poster and information sheet about the area of moon you own. Its only a gimmick thing from amazon but my daughter absolutely loved hers last year.
