Fitness ‘stuff’ for teen boy - any ideas

ShatteredDream · 05/12/2021 21:14

Ds is almost 16 and suddenly interested in getting fit. He’s asked for fitness ‘stuff’ he can use in his room. But he has no idea what this stuff is…
Any ideas what I can get him that seems like a gift but will fit the brief

I should say, he shares a room with his younger brother and it’s tiny, so space saving is a must

A foam roller, medicine ball or possibly a kettlebell.

They may not feel too much like a gift but if that's what he wants then I would.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 05/12/2021 21:18

DS (15) used to borrow my titchy 2.5kg weights and soon outgrew them, so I bought him his own 5kg ones.

dementedpixie · 05/12/2021 21:19

Dumbells or resistance bands maybe

ShirleyBadass · 05/12/2021 21:19

A decent mat, dumbells and a subscription to a fitness app like Apple Fit or Fiit?

A tracker that works with either - a watch or chest strap.

LalalalalalaLand123 · 05/12/2021 21:20

Fitbit

Sorry posted too soon!
Handheld weights

AuntieStella · 05/12/2021 21:23

Resistance bands,, weights, mat, can you fit a bar in the doorway for pull ups? Weighted hula hoop?

Online HIIT and Pilates classes - I tend to use free ones, but someone might have recommendations for a good subscription

dementedpixie · 05/12/2021 21:25

Weighted hoops are big. Unless you have a large room it won't be suitable

Newdad19 · 05/12/2021 21:27

We have an abs roller and it's great and can be stored in a cupboard etc and doesn't take a lot of room

Laufeythejust · 05/12/2021 21:27

Adjustable dumbbells so he can change the weights for the exercise or as he progresses (I got mine from decathlon).

Decathlon is your friend!
A chin up bar which you can fit in the door frame?
TRX straps which you shut in the door?
A set of adjustable hand weights. Again, Decathlon do a set for about £30 and they go from about 4kg to about 10kg on each weight so you can change weights as you get stronger & depending on whether you're doing arm or legs

MurielSpriggs · 05/12/2021 21:32

Maybe need to clarify whether he means aerobically fit (is a bit overweight or wanting to build up stamina for some sport?) or does he mean cosmetically looking toned or muscular to impress the girls (or boys). Those two things need different approaches and equipment. If it's about the muscles then it's basically about weights.

Rantyrantason · 05/12/2021 21:38

Adjustable dumbbells www.sportsdirect.com/everlast-dumbbell-set-761032#colcode=76103270

(Good thing adjustable is he can start lower and build up without needing to buy a whole new set)

Door pull up bar

Could also see if there any personal trainers in your area that would cater to teens. he could have 1-2 sessions with to show him different exercises (and how to do them safely and appropriately for his age/muscles).

WeAllHaveWings · 05/12/2021 21:53

pull up bar

resistance bands to help with pull ups until he gets enough strength to do himself

Mat for situps, push ups, planks

ab roller

Dumbells

A few classes with a PT will tell him how he can use equipment he has at home without hurting himself.

Running trainers is another one.

Gym membership/circuit training classes

Boys tend to gravitate towards heavy weights, but I wouldnt get him them for home until he knows how to use them without hurting himself, especially his back.

ShatteredDream · 05/12/2021 21:58

Excellent ideas here thank you all! I’m off to check them all out

@MurielSpriggs I think it’s building up muscle he’s keen on, he’s very thin. Eats like a horse but it’s just his build. He has adhd and asd so lots of energy but no interest in actual sports.

@ShatteredDream, how much does he weigh may I ask ?

Rivermonsters · 05/12/2021 22:59

If he’s very thin IMO he should try to put on weight before building muscle (was a stick insect myself but now building up muscle so I can speak from personal experience) . Maybe some 2-3kg dumbbells? If you want, I can share my healthy diet plan that’s gained me 2.9-4kg every month

TheFoundations · 05/12/2021 23:02

These are brilliant. Designed by a Navy Seal to work all the muscles in the tiny spaces available in submarines. This and a pull up bar, and he's sorted.

Are you suggesting he tries to gain fat before he tries to gain muscle? Why?
Rivermonsters · 05/12/2021 23:06

@TheFoundations it’s not ‘gaining fat’ it’s putting on weight. Because if he’s very thin then IMO he should get to a healthy weight before starting weight training . This is my 3 month transformation

2-3kg dumbells will be of little use to a teenage male.

PPs are right in suggesting the dumbells with screw on/off plates that can be adjusted to be quite heavy as he builds strength.

Rivermonsters · 05/12/2021 23:09

@Hoesbeforebroes if he’s on the thin/underweight side then you don’t wanna push it too hard. You’re right on the adjustable dumbbells 😂 wish I got them instead of the fixed ones Grin

I've bought this for my 13 year old...just a stocking filler bit but seems like very good value for £7.00!
