What family game shall I get this year?

We have 11 and 7 year old plus adult family members.

I was thinking Articulate for kids? Does anyone have this and is it a good one?

Any other recommendations?

What sort of games do you like, and what have you already got?

cloudtree · 03/12/2021 11:39

ticket to ride

BigSandyBalls2015 · 03/12/2021 11:42

I think there's a family friendly cards against humanity out now.

If you haven't got exploding kittens it's a great crowd pleaser.

TheSpiral · 03/12/2021 11:49

We have a ridiculous amount of games. The ones the kids (11 and 14) like playing as a family are Articulate (not a kids version), Pictionary and Sushi Go. The ones they like playing themselves are King of Tokyo, Munchkins and Boss Monster. The ones I try to make them play with me are Catan, Scrabble, Pandemic and Carcassone.

Two which sounded like they would be good but didn't live up to expectations were Taskmaster and House of Games. We got the Taskmaster game last year and it was fun but messes up the house somewhat! We also got the Richard Osman House of Games but found it didn't really include the youngest and also it was hard to see the cards when you all had to be looking at them at the same time.

How many players? Cluedo Junior is a great game if you haven’t got more than 6.

ExPatHereForAChat · 03/12/2021 17:18

We enjoy articulate.
Code Names would also be great for those ages.

Scotland Yard

Hoviscats · 03/12/2021 20:14

oh also following this thread! I have a board/card game loving 5 year old and a less keen but generally willing 11 year old.

I would love some new recommendations!

evilharpy · 03/12/2021 20:15

Rapidough is good. Fun for adults too even when no children are involved!

stayathomer · 03/12/2021 20:18

Articulate is a huge favourite here, also risk (although 7 yo gives up and just plays with the little menGrin) and labrynth, snakes and ladders or ludo

ivegotthisyeah · 03/12/2021 20:18

I keep seeing one advertised I quite fancy where you have to say sentences in a different accent the advert can't even get passed the grandma that's had a glass of wine cause she's laughing that much - made me giggle

YouPrettyThings · 03/12/2021 20:48

Following too. We went to a friend's a few Christmases ago and I loved their game - we split into 2 teams and each team had a sock (actually from the game box, not random ones) full of stuff - each round 2 players from the opposing teams faced off, one selected a card which showed a picture of one of the random items in the sock and without looking you each had to use your hand to search for the item in your stock - first person to retrieve the right item won the round. I loved it because my 3 year old could join in, and was actually quite good, but the 40-odd yr olds enjoyed it too - and got very competitive. It was harder than it appeared! Proper all round family game, no idea what it's called. I'm looking for something like that for this Christmas as we have such a broad range of ages on Christmas Day.

hobbitharry · 03/12/2021 21:01

It is called The Sock Game ! Several versions around

YouPrettyThings · 03/12/2021 21:06

Original name! 😆 It worked for all ages, I'd love to hear about other equally family friendly games

Tuliprain · 04/12/2021 16:36

I’ve been looking at throw throw burrito but so expensive.

Is that the normal one or kids version of articulate?

@BonnyEm

Scotland Yard
I came on to say Scotland Yard. My DC have also really enjoyed Mysterium Park and One night a Werewolf.
Wejustdontknow · 04/12/2021 18:56

We play a lot of games, the all round family favourites are exploding kittens, colourbrain, hotel tycoon and monopoly. This year my kids are getting ticket to ride, tacocat spelled backwards, more or less and go for broke.
Also recommend stupid deaths, cluedo and trivial pursuit

checketycheck · 04/12/2021 20:59

Those who have played Articulate- is there a way it could be adapted for 3 players? Or does it only work for 4+?

Sunshineandrainbow · 04/12/2021 21:06

Sock game looks like a good one for us as we have no table for many board games.
Would it be too young for late teens?
