Christmas trees and toddlers!

DS (2 years 1 month) clocked the chocolate decorations I hung up last night on our (6ft) tree. He plucked one off, stood on it and shook the chocolate out of the wrapper before eating it. I moved the rest up a few branches so he climbed on the sofa and got another...then he started throwing his football at the tree to dislodge them before finally asking daddy for a ladder...

Aww, lol. Tom is 20 months and i'm sure he'd do the same if we had chocolate decorations on our tree.

EmsMum · 16/12/2007 23:27

If you must have chocolate decorations why not put them up one per day?

We don't because I wouldn't trust the dog not to sniff them out and chocolate is a dog poison. I wouldn't trust DH either - DD (even when a toddler) would probably the most trustworthy member of my crew!

stockingfiller · 16/12/2007 23:31

we havent got any as im chocoholic they woulnt last long enugh much more cost effective to buy me slab of choc to start with lol
dd (18mo) has started taking things off the tree till i told her if she does it again i will take tree down no tree no santa!

mairseydotes · 16/12/2007 23:38

why shouldn't we have choc decorations?
At least while they last!
They are swiss choc and from m&s if that makes any difference

My reservations about chocolate decorations are purely practical!

LazyLinePainterJane · 17/12/2007 07:47

I have made my own this year but now don't want to put them on the tree as I suspect my hard work will be a waste...

TEUCHywithallthetrimmings · 17/12/2007 08:00

nope...'chocolate decoration' is an oxymoron in my book

If it is decorative then it should not be delicious and tempting...

Hide them round the back?

yelnats · 17/12/2007 08:26

we have cadburys caramel bells and dd1 hates them - dd2 is a bit wee at 10 months but doesnt help stop her from trying to pull the tree down! lol

Soooo glad dd1 doesnt like them - all the more yummy choccies for me - like I need an excuse.

EniDeepMidwinter · 17/12/2007 09:40

no choc decorations here

in fact no tree until the 21st

but I might give the crystal family heirloom decs a miss this year (dd3 19 months)

mumbleboo · 17/12/2007 12:36

My tree is tied to a hook in the wall with tinsel and the lights are plugged into circuit breakers before they go into the wall - i predicted DS (21mths) would try to water the tree with his beaker and i was proved right the other day!

The chocolate decorations were spotted pretty quickly here too but DS will tidy all his toys without becoming distracted if he gets a chocolate at the end of it so they will definitely be coming back next year!

LazyLinePainterJane · 17/12/2007 13:06

Am thinking about taking the tree back down now and putting it back on Christmas Eve now that DS and the puppy have pulled all the tinsel and baubles from the bottom half

lorisparkle · 17/12/2007 13:55

My tree is looking rather odd too. The top quarter is rather over decorated and the bottom is very empty with just a couple of soft / inedible / unbreakable decorations. The tinsel and lights are pushed right into the trunck of the tree. It is an absolute nightmare. DS1 (17mnths) seems to grow every night and can reach a new layer of decorations so up they go to the top branches. So far he has taken a chunk out of 3 foil covered polysterine decorations. Unwrapped 6 pretend present decorations and started eating the foil and chocolate from 2 chocolate decorations. My friend is putting her tree up on Christmas Eve but even though it is a nightmare I'm sticking with it and buying a few more unbreakable / inedible decorations for the bottom of the tree.

newgirl · 17/12/2007 16:32

our tree has fallen over twice now due to crazy toddlers - we are soldiering on with ever-firmer bases

santaspregnantlittlehelper · 17/12/2007 18:40

dh insisted that we put our tree in our never used front room (we have a big family room / kitchen out the back) so everyone walking past gets to see it and we don't. but at least all the decorations are intact

next year we will probably be instructed to put the baby dan contraption thing round it to keep little hands away.

aaaah the fun of christmas

sophy · 17/12/2007 18:46

Never mind the toddlers, the dog keeps stealing the salt-dough decorations from the tree.

lorisparkle · 17/12/2007 20:05

santaspregnantlittlehelper - my DH suggested putting the tree in the playpen and perhaps it would have been a good idea

frostythesnowmum · 17/12/2007 20:09

We don't have a full sized tree just a small fibre optic one whilst we have toddlers - we gave up real trees years ago when the dog used them to piss on

Christmaxbear · 17/12/2007 21:33

Am feeling fairly smug reading this as dd is nearly 3 and fairly trustworthy (as long as we don't introduce choc decorations) and ds 9months, not crawling yet Of course the tree will be up for another few weeks so I might be laughing on the other side of my face before the festive season is over as he suddenly becomes mobile!

santaspregnantlittlehelper · 17/12/2007 21:49

lol frosty

higgys · 17/12/2007 21:56

I dont blame him - I'd be sneaking them off the tree myself.

divamummy2 · 18/12/2007 14:04

chocolate decorations and toddler big no no.
dd was 20m last year wanted chocolate decorations hAD hestic time. i didnt buy this year, only bought advent calendar.

halia · 18/12/2007 15:50

I'm doing well so far, tree up and DS (32 months) has only had 5 decorations of it! He's getting used to it now so it should remain looking good for a while. Last year was a nightmare though!

OnACaffieneHigh · 18/12/2007 15:56

To stop me eatting all the chocolate off the tree when I was a toddler my mum used to pretend it was me that created the chocolate by wishing really hard. I had to close my eyes and wish and when I opened them there would be chocolate on the tree! I was always surprised that it only worked at 'special' times during the day.

ibblewob · 18/12/2007 17:38

Hmm, am not in a position to complain as have just ate 8 Quality Streets in about 5 mins while sitting on here thinking 'really must get started with dinner'!

We have a tiny 3 foot tree on top of our highest chest of drawers, which seems to solve most problems (except my desire to turn our house into Santa's Grotto). Have had it up since the end of November (couldn't help myself) - DH was absolutely horrified.

PanicPressiePants · 18/12/2007 20:52

We have 2 7 foot trees (one in front room, and one in dining room)

Ds (2.4) hasn't noticed our trees have chocolate decorations on them

He has a favourite decoration that he keeps taking off and putting back in different places, but other than that he's ignoring them. [smug emoticon]
