does anyone have any ideas on an alternative recipe for small festive pies. My husband loves pastry but not mincemeat.

Any thoughts....

lemon curd tarts sprinkled with icing sugar and some small strawberries. Simple and quite nice.

southeastastra · 16/12/2007 21:22

apple pie

mylittleponey · 16/12/2007 21:23

agree with apple pies - with spices

onepieceoflollipop · 16/12/2007 21:23

Ooh yes apple pie and put a bit of allspice or similar and perhaps mixed fruit/peel to make them a bit more festive.

janeite · 16/12/2007 21:23

Maids of honour - pastry base, raspberry jam and then an almondy sponge on top; lovely. Or similar but with a coconutty type sponge on top.

PuppyDogTails · 16/12/2007 21:23

Cranberry pies - keep it festive.

pinkspottywellies · 16/12/2007 21:23

Jam tarts? You could cut out Christmassy shapes of pastry for the top.

x-post mylittleponey!

madame · 16/12/2007 21:25

Janeite, what do you mean by almondy sponge as this sounds nice

cod had a fab recipe from good housekeeping - buy ready-rolled puff pastry, brsh with egg, sugar, cinnamon etc, roll up, slice to make cinnamon whirl things

Like bakewell tarts I think - something like this (although I haven't tried this one):

onepieceoflollipop · 16/12/2007 21:34

Stop now. I have some ready made pastry in the freezer and you are making me want to go and bake...

madame · 17/12/2007 17:09

thank you everyone, not sure what I am missing onepieceoflollipop by what you mean x-post mylittleponey!

'x-post' means 'cross-posted' - someone else (in this case mylittleponey) had the same idea and posted it while onepiecepflollipop was still typing her post...

make your own spicy mix with dried apricots cranberries and blueberries and chopped nuts and cinnamon or cloves.mix with a little redcurrant jelly
buy wanton pastry and make little wantons or parcels.or line a bun tin with well buttered layers of wanton or filo squares and fill with your own mix
can also do this with brie or goast cheese for a savoury version

BBBee · 17/12/2007 17:31

make baklava

MrsBadger · 17/12/2007 17:33

sorry but am roffling at wanton pastry - am imagining it flirting shamelessly with the sausages in bacon and flashing its cleavage at the mincemeat...

wonton

Wanton pastry! Love it! especially as these are ideas for you to make for your husband!

Baklava is gorgeous - I've never made it at Christmas time but I can imagine it going very well with the general air of greediness and desire for sweetness that seems to happen at this time of year.

CremolaFirCone · 17/12/2007 18:05

oh i am a dick am aughing at myself now.FFS
