If you dont eat Christmas dinner until the evening what do you have for lunch?

Our usual routine of bacon butties for breakfast (pastries for me), christmas dinner at muns at lunchtime and a buffet affair in the evening is changing to make it easier for mum who still wants to host but wants more time to prepare and cook - and a lie in!

So it will be me and my DH and 2 dc and possibly my sister and niece at lunchtime.

What can we have that is sufficiently festive but really easy to do without spoiling our dinner later?

We sit down for dinner anywhere between 2 and 4 on Christmas day depending on when food is ready, me and some of my family will have a beer in the late morning and maybe a breakfast, but every year I seem to misjudge it either undereating or over eating, I'm curious to see when and what to eat for breakfast so you can eat all of Christmas dinner

Oh dear. Wrong thread 🙈

We always just have nibbles during the day. Vegetables, dips, cheese, sausage, nuts. Rarely anything that requires heating. It’s all out so people can graze at as desired.

Chickydoo · 30/11/2021 05:15

We don't have a breakfast or lunch as such.
Nibbles if peckish during the day. Maybe some smoked salmon blinis with Champagne. Teens will help themselves to what they fancy.
Dinner is early, around 6.00pm then goes on all evening.

FixItUpChappie · 30/11/2021 05:42

Just snacking through the day, an appetizer or shrimp ring will come out at some point Brew

Breakfast is only if needed, help yourself.

Turkey goes in oven around 930 and everything else is prepped day before or in the next hour.

Around 11, Buck’s Fizz is served with smoked salmon on bread, homemade sausage rolls, nuts & any other nibbles that have been made (in advance).

Turkey dinner served 3ish

Pudding 430ish.

Cheese 7-8 ish

Chocolate throughout.

A turkey (or salmon) sandwich and/or slice of Christmas cake is offered around 9pm but most stick with chocolate.

We just have a normal breakfast eg a piece of toast. Then church and a walk. Lunchtime- smoked salmon on brown bread, sausage rolls but just as nibbles not a sit down lunch. Presents in the afternoon then the main meal for dinner, which is early to accommodate small children- 6ish.

We like a big festive brunch - deep fried mozzarella and bacon egg-soaked butties. Or crepes, or a full on English fryup followed by continental pastries. Having that at 10ish means we can't face eating again till 6pm at the earliest.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 30/11/2021 08:26

Normal breakfast
Lunch is smoked salmon, nibbles, M&S yummy stuff.
Dinner at 6.30-7

SeaToSki · 30/11/2021 08:27

I try and keep it simple so I am not in the kitchen all day/dishwasher doesnt have a nervous breakdown

Breakfast is pancakes
Lunch is homemade soup with freshly baked bread rolls (out of the freezer) with ham and cheese to stuff in them for the dc who are less keen on soup and then mice pies w brandy butter
Dinner is the turkey feast

TeapotCollection · 30/11/2021 08:27

Baileys. Preferably the orange truffle version

caringcarer · 30/11/2021 08:27

We have Xmas breakfast full English plus scrambled eggs, croissant, Xmas tree crumpets and fresh fruit with yogart. We have this at 9.30am, then don't have Xmas dinner until 3.30pm. Then turkey sandwich and mini sausage rolls, more pigs in blankets, cheese board, fruit, crisps and chocolate fingers for tea.

RedHot22 · 30/11/2021 08:29

Brunch - late morning.
Followed by fizz, fizz and more fizz

MooseBreath · 30/11/2021 08:33

When we do Christmas with DH's family, Christmas dinner is at around 1 or 2pm.

When it's my family, we eat the roast at 6pm. For lunch (at about 1pm), we typically do a selection of deli meats, cheeses, crackers, rolls, vegetables, olives, pickles, and hummus.

Personally, I prefer eating a roast later in the day. I'm always exhausted after a big meal and find that Christmas day really drags when we eat such a big meal in the early afternoon.

Longdistance · 30/11/2021 08:34

We have dinner after 2pm. As it takes ages to open presents, play with them etc it takes up the morning with dds, so I’ve prepped dinner beforehand and dinner is usually served at 2pm or after.
We have bacon butties, or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs in the morning.

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 30/11/2021 08:45

Slightly off topic, but what is a sambo?

RedHot22 · 30/11/2021 08:47

Sandwich?

Fairylights25 · 30/11/2021 08:47

Presents, a dog walk in the morning followed by a late breakfast, play games and with gifts, leisurely serve Christmas dinner around 4.45pm for us, as it lasts into the evening which is very festive. I don't think we will ever go back to the old way of serving lunch at 1-2pm. Too exhausting both drinking wine at lunch time and the endless feel of non stop food coming out of the kitchen. This way is much easier and relaxed.

rainbowandglitter · 30/11/2021 08:55

What time is the late meal? We have breakfast around 10ish then Xmas lunch at 3/4 and that's it for the day. Obviously we snack on chocolate etc throughout the day too.

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 30/11/2021 09:05

@RedHot22

Sandwich?
Ah! Thank you Smile
Doomscrolling · 30/11/2021 09:16

Big cooked breakfast mid to late morning. Snacks as desired, Christmas meal around 6ish.

With a cooked breakfast we never need a lunch as such. Two big meals (brunch and Christmas dinner) is ample.

Cuwins · 30/11/2021 09:18

We have always had our Xmas meal in the evening- about 5pm. We have a normal breakfast then for lunch we have French bread, cold hams/cheese/pates etc. actually my fav bit of Xmas food!

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/11/2021 09:20

Breakfast around 11, dinner 7ish. Not much else, a few crisps and quality street. Tend to eat more on Boxing Day, love left overs.

GoGoGretaDoll · 30/11/2021 09:29

Us too @MrsSkylerWhite - I see Christmas dinner as a process I have to go through in order to get to Boxing Day leftovers.
