Rent a Christmas tree? What does everyone think?

I have been looking at ways to be more eco friendly and stumbled upon a company who rent you a Christmas tree every year, then they take them back, replant them, and rent you the same one again next year until the trees 'retire' to a forest on the companies land.

The tree rental is probably about what a real tree would cost each year (I currently have a fake tree, but when that turns to shit I may well go for this).

Is this a good idea? Are there any downfalls I cant see (besides emissions from the delivery). Or does anyone have a better idea for a more sustainable Christmas tree?

@Rubyupbeat

How on earth can a tree go from being outside in the cold, to living in a house for a month, central heated or blazing fire, then out again in the cold etc...... It sounds a bit of a fib from the company, tbh.
Mine copes ok. It seems like lots of them dont cope though.

My dps and pils have been putting up their fake trees for 40+ years and while they don’t look like modern trees they are still going strong.

If you already have a fake tree the most eco friendly option is to keep using it.

My dd has ordered one and the supplier has asked if she could be a bit flexible about dates, since there’s huge demand this year.

This is the second time you've advertised this company, OP.

1) I'm not advertising anything, I'm asking if its a good idea or if anyone has a better idea for a sustainable Christmas tree, of which there have been a few.
  1. I've never mentioned this company anywhere Confused could you provide a link to the thread where I have supposedly advertised this company?

  2. it would be pretty crap if I was advertising because many have said its a rubbish idea because only 20% will be planted, which isn't (as far as I can see) mentioned on their site, so I would be pretty unlikely to rent from this company on that basis alone.

@Yummypumpkin

I played the role of a Christmas tree in my nursery play.

I was chopped down by a boy called John, then dragged along the floor, stood in a bucket and the other children put tinsel on me.

It was really traumatic and I still think about it.

So all in all for a tree to go through this repeatedly would be pretty harsh, speaking from experience.

Flowers I'm sorry you had to go through that 🤣🤣

I'm starting to think when my fake tree goes I might not bother with a tree at all. I have a big light up snowman, I wonder if I could just stick him in the tree corner instead.

I have my tree from last year in a pot in the garden, it was doing amazing all summer, have changed it's pot in the meantime to help its roots....but winter hit and it died about 3 weeks ago, gutted!

BoredZelda · 02/12/2021 11:37

I don't like the idea of chopping Christmas trees down every year and throwing them away, it seems a bit disrespectful of nature.

They are grown for that purpose, and if recycled they are used for wood chips, which, if they didn’t come from Christmas trees, would just mean other trees are planted for this purpose. The process of growing them really helps the environment too.

Buying a locally sourced tree, usually planted by farmers and this helps them maintain their business, is actually the most ecologically friendly way of having a Christmas tree.

The delivery ones seem like a bit of a fad and don’t always live up to the promise.

I’d be concerned about the roots getting damaged if it it continuously dug up year after year, can’t imagine it’d survive long.

Ive always had artificial trees but bought a (cut) real tree last year for the kitchen but that was a disaster. So am trying again this year with a potted tree With the hope that I can keep it alive.

Last one lasted 3 years in the pot before it died (heatwave) so even if I get 3 years out of this one will be money well spent!

3 years isn't bad for a potted tree at all.

Maybe getting a small potted one is the answer, I only have a small garden but could definitely find space for a small one.

I'm really trying to be more environment aware so I'll also be making paper decorations to replace the ones I have that break now too.
