How much would you pay for your own gin?

Specifically, I have seen two places DH could get to where he could go on a half day course and create his own gin.

One costs £30 to attend and then £60 for a 50cl bottle of his own creation.

The other one is £120 all in, including one of his bottles and one of theirs, however it’s not clear how big they are.

Our go-to gin is about £20 for 1L so am not sure if the £60 people are having a laugh or this is reasonable.

Anyone else have experience of pricing these experiences? Thanks!

Sounds rubbish- sorry but these gin experiences are just adding crap to cheap gin- they don't distill the gin.

Buy a lovely bottle of Harris Gin- now available on amazon but still not in shops

You can make your own. Use a tasteless alcohol base, and yes vodka counts, and then add the aromatics. You can buy kits online if you don't want to buy them.

A good gin which is regarded as more than just a supermarket brand will typically set you back £40 - 50. So making your own for 60 isn't dreadful. Its not cheap but the whole point is its a one off.

You can make your own 'bathtub gin', by getting a bottle of vodka and then infusing it with botanical, spices and fruit. I spend a lot of time last year doing it with cracking results. But its not as 'clean' as a properly distilled gin with your own stuff added.

My point is, that if you know gin and are really into it, its probably a reasonable price. But you can equally do it on the cheap. It depends on how much of a puritan you are and how much you love gin!

Personally i think most supermarket gins for £20 are ok, but not in the same league as some of the better gins on the market. With a few notable exceptions.

Some of the experiences do redistill gin btw.

Just make sure you know what you are getting.

I did a gin tasting where they live distilled and we got to taste it during the session which was pretty cool but it was a one off night.

We buy tanqueray 10 which is £26 at ocado, or if I'm feeling flush, Gin Mare or Twisted Nose - about £40 each.

If he adores Gin, then do the bombay sapphire tour or similar, but if he's not obsessed, just buy a juice bottle.

A juice bottle?!

A Good bottle!

I paid £60 per person for a gin making experience, which included a bottle of my creation.
I could have made

EeeByeGummieBear · 29/11/2021 20:28

Sorry posted too soon. I could have bought something nicer cheaper, but the experience was great. Lots of fun samples to drink and the people running it were very knowledgeable

Racingadmin · 29/11/2021 20:29

If the expensive one is Portobello road then it's a good fun experience and we got very drunk as given 4 strong cocktails over the couple of hours doing the distillery tour and designing our gin.

They also keep your recipe on file so that you can re-order. Not sure it would be fun on your own though

broccolibush · 29/11/2021 20:36

Agree with Racingadmin - if the expensive one is the ginstitute it’s well worth the £120 price tag as is a marvellous afternoon/evening out. Just don’t arrange to meet people at church afterwards (as we did with my parents - they were plastered). The gin we made wasn’t necessarily the best with tonic but was decent sipping gin and we learned loads on the day - and drank so, so much. Many cocktails and a taster of everyone in the group’s gins. Obvs mine was the best, but I haven’t re-ordered in many, many years.

ChoccyJules · 29/11/2021 21:54

Yes the £120 is Portobello Rd, the other is somewhat closer to us, which might help if DH is a little fuzzy-headed afterwards. But that one seems more expensive for what you get.

I know I can get a decent bottle instead but it was the making experience I liked, however I have taken on board comments about distilling vs mixing.

I got some kits for £6 last year
