This is a weird one. Dd2 is 9. She mentioned that she liked a toy that her very young cousin had. It was a little case with a dog and lots of accessories. When you open the case each accessory can be put in it’s own place on a little hook or a shelf. She doesn’t want the toy but she likes the idea of organising and sorting things. (She once sorted out all the Hama beads into colours in a sectioned box).
Any ideas of something I could get for her that might be similar?

One of those fold out tool boxes with lots of little sections and lots of packets of craft materials from Poundland or B&M or hobby craft (beads, feathers, pom poms, pipe cleaners, stickers, sequins etc) for her to add to the box?

JustLikea · 29/11/2021 11:36

Once it's sorted though there's nothing left to do so it's a bit tricky

I used to love sorting out my granny's big sewing box

You should get her to help you sort out the washing etc putting all the socks together

LadyDanburysHat · 29/11/2021 11:38

A label maker maybe? It gives her the option of sorting lots of things.

sashh · 29/11/2021 11:42

One of those tool kits that are actually lots of little drawers and a load of stuff to sort.

I love having things well sorted

Something like this

canadagoose1 · 29/11/2021 11:43

Could you send her to live with me for a week please? Grin

I came on to suggest one of those big toolboxes as well. I had my lego in mine when I was a kid and I loved sorting it.

Sockpile · 29/11/2021 11:50

How about Pokemon cards and a folder to keep them in. I’ve spent many hours sorting my sons cards into the correct categories!

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 29/11/2021 11:53

I'm like your DD.

I like massive Lego kits & it's much more about the 'sorting' & following instructions than what it builds. I like buying it as a job lot with mixed boxes and many sets of instructions. Friends are thrilled if I'll go & sort out their kids Lego etc & I love doing it. The kids then get a renewed interest in it. Win/win/win)

Big jigsaws and sorting the edges/colours much more than doing it.

As a child I loved sorting out & setting up my barbie house (I didn't really enjoy 'playing' with it once 'set up'.

I definitely organised things like Hamma Beads etc.

Maybe try her with a crochet hook. If you get a decent one (the cheap ones can snag the wool & make it a miserable experience) and something like Stylecraft DK, there are a ton of crochet tutorials online (Bella coco & many others) and the pause/rewind function is invaluable!! I find that crochet helps that part of me too.

I was going to suggest coloured beads, but I see she's done that!

Would she be interested in stamp collecting? When I was that age (many years ago) you could buy, quite cheaply, packets of mixed used stamps, which you would sort into their different countries and put them in your stamp album.

Used was better than new, because there was the added interest of the postmark.

Some of the stamps were quite old, for countries that no longer existed.

haggisaggis · 29/11/2021 12:02

Something like Sylvanian families that's fiddly but you need to set up a scene? A dolls house too - but she may feel she's too old for it

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/11/2021 12:02

Logic puzzles, such as Genius Square?

mrstea301 · 29/11/2021 12:04

Would she maybe like cross stitching? I love it but part of the enjoyment is sorting out all the threads and things. Caterpillar cross stitch have started doing good kits for children if you want her to try it out, I don't think they're very expensive.

Usuallyhappycamper · 29/11/2021 12:05

How about puzzle type games? Marble solitaire or quadrillion rely on having things in the correct place. Or those interlocking wooden puzzles.

TheFairPrincess · 29/11/2021 12:09

A little jewellery stand with some different bits of jewellery from Claire's etc? I remember being fascinated with the ones that looked like little cupboards as a child, with ring hooks and littles drawers and things!

Knittedfairies · 29/11/2021 12:13

She needs a button tin; my mum's had all sorts in it - bits of suspenders, nappy pins, cap badges, hooks and eyes, teddy bear eyes amongst all the buttons.

MyAnacondaMight · 29/11/2021 12:29

Rubik’s cube?! Might keep her busy for a while…

TickledOnion · 29/11/2021 12:37

Thanks for all the interesting suggestions. I used to love sorting out my grandma’s button tin.
Unfortunately her interest in sorting doesn’t extend to tidying up.
I think she might like one of those pegboards for her room with little boxes, shelves and hooks to put pens and jewellery and other bits and bobs in and on. Doesn’t seem like a very exciting present though.

A jewellery making kit, she could sort her beads in several different ways and if she makes jewellery with it she can get more beads.

Yes, I forgot about that!! I used to do a lot, but my eyes aren't what they were (snd I prefer fine linen than Aida).
MerryMarigold · 29/11/2021 13:00

My son collects football cards and loves sorting/ recategorising them. He has about 20,000 cards that he's collected over 10 years.

I think the Lego idea is great and also jigsaws. Maybe find one that has obvious categories eg. A rainbow that she could sort the colours out. Another thing which a sorting brain enjoys is painting by numbers. You can get very very fiddly ones with lots of paints. I did one with dd when self isolating in summer. There were about 30 different colours and it was so addictive finding the numbers and corresponding colour. There's lots on Amazon.

I got a sewing basket at that age or a little younger. 50 years on I still use it. When I was a child I used to love sorting it out, putting the needles in a needle book, sorting the press studs etc.has she got a sectioned box for hair doodahs?

TheFairPrincess · 29/11/2021 13:03

It's not always about what is considered exciting by us though! If it's what she likes it's what she likes :)

Some of my favourite presents as a child were big thick ancient history encyclopaedias. I'm so grateful my mum bothered to buy them!

www.babipur.co.uk/grapat-toys/grapat-entire-range/grapat-mandala-pieces.html

Grapat mandala - small little wooden pieces in various colours and shapes. They could be sorted by colour and shape but are also used to make designs and artwork

Cuwins · 29/11/2021 13:08

I used to love the organising and putting together of playmobil but then rarely actually played with it!

TheSpottedZebra · 29/11/2021 13:10

Jewellery making sounds a lovely idea. you could probably buy big job lots of 2nd hand beads and a drawer unit for her to sort, plus the bits and bobs for making the jewellery?

Or you could go wild in ikea and get drawer /wardrobe organisers?

Does she have any other interests or hobbies that you could tap into?

ShortColdandGrey · 29/11/2021 13:10

There is an game on he xbox called unboxing. You are basically moving house and unboxing all the items into the correct place in the correct room. My DD absolutely loved it. I suppose that info will only be useful if you have an xbox haha
