I got my mum wind-up Jesus and Mary figures once. My 2 brothers thought they were hilarious and started having races with them. Mum however was furious and threw them in the bin.

No sense of humour these catholic ex-nuns.

Sandies · 16/12/2007 21:55

My ex MIL made me a pair of cerise pink dungarees, Well I was 8 months pregnant. I looked insane. My ex and I laughed for hours. When DD (aged 2) opened her presents we found MIL had made her a pair from the leftover material.

JetPeanut · 16/12/2007 22:07

A self-electrolysis kit. I didn't ask for it. But my SIL saw one and thought of me. Am I that F*ing hairy? (Answer: yes, actually I suppose I am! )

mumbear · 16/12/2007 22:08

I was offered a washing machine this year from my MIL. (DP got a HD telly she thought it would be nice for me to have something just for me) erm no ill stick to the straighteners i origianally asked for if you dont mind!!! Bless her

bookofchristmascarolsmum · 16/12/2007 22:24

Washing machines cost more than straighteners though .

edam · 16/12/2007 22:27

Cliff, your mum is an ex-nun? Wow.

mumbear · 16/12/2007 22:32

Yes they do but I have a fully working washing machine but my hair is a HUGE fuzzy mess!!!

theUrbanDryAdventCalendar · 16/12/2007 22:36

mumbear - i love the way your MIL assumed a washing machine would be something "just for you"!!

my MIL gave me the most appalling pair of slippers last year. they were really, really tasteless. i gave them to the hamster to make his bed with! but they weren't insulting...

mumbear · 16/12/2007 22:40

I think she thinks im not doing as good a job as her at looking after her one and only son cos i make him do his fair share of the housework. At least he can wipe his arse now he lives with me!

CliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 16/12/2007 22:43

edam - explains a lot I'd say.

edam · 16/12/2007 22:44

um, I guess it might!

Are you not going to give us any hilarious anecdotes from your childhood, then?

pukkapatch · 16/12/2007 22:44

mb, surely it was 37 metres of the stuff?

Krimble · 16/12/2007 22:47

Ex BF's mother gave me a bottle of Clean and Clear.

Same woman gave me a pair of pink fluffy high heel mule slippers. Strange as I don't think she ever saw me in anything other than sensible laceups or trainers.

bluefox · 16/12/2007 22:54

Had a small business a few years ago and my staff gave me a £5 Asda voucher. Not a bought one but one that one of them got for nothing for spending a certain amount in the run up to Christmas.

pollywollybauble · 17/12/2007 02:28

MIL offered us money to decorate dd's bedroom after dd and i had drawn and coloured giant maisy characters and hung them up "i thought you might like some nice wallpaper"!!

doesn't beat the knicker elastic though...ping....

mylittlepudding · 17/12/2007 04:55

My eSM (is that right for evil stepmother???) buys a whole pile of crap at the very end of the sales, and wraps it all up separately, for next Christmas. Last year we received a 3cm x 3cm 'smallest book of belly dancing'; a bright pink bag that folded up inside itself to become a tiny bright pink bag; a shower cap; two packets of tictacs and a stale mini-Christmas cake from Sainsbury's.

DP gets really worked up about it- the waste, really, as so much ends up in the bin. We open their presents in their absence after a large glass of wine - this enables one to be less irritated, I have found!

silkcushion · 17/12/2007 05:59

my OWN mother bought me an oven liner thing for a roasting pan one year from the betterware catalogue AND a kitchen roll.

This was the first yr with dh - he thought she was mad - still does
