Gift for single 50 year old friend ...

PinkLadyFriday · 28/11/2021 10:53

I desperately need ideas for my 50 year old friend. She’s lovely and gentle, doesn’t drink and over the years I’ve saturated the candle/scarf/chocolate options. Any ideas Mumsnet friends?

Decent vibrator

Coronawireless · 29/11/2021 16:12

Looks like OP should have just said, What can I get for my friend? and NO further info, eg age, gender…nothing! 90 year old Peruvian nun, 32 year old father of eight, 4 year old girl….Irrelevant!!!
Well imo her age is relevant. Otherwise people might suggest getting her a Disney princess outfit (if they thought she was 4) or Pink joggers (if 14). And her single status is relevant imo. If she was married with a newborn and 2 toddlers that might preclude gifts involving late nights out, weekends away, a white throw for the sofa or….candles.

Coronawireless · 29/11/2021 16:13

And why so many snarky responses saying Oh since she’s 50 why not get her a shawl etc.
Why does saying she’s 50 mean that OP thinks she’s old? Maybe OP is 87 and thinks 50 is super young.

SparklingLime · 29/11/2021 16:36

Will @PinkLadyFriday come back and provide a budget and interests?

lightisnotwhite · 29/11/2021 17:15

Well one of the differences between single and with a significant other may be the quality of the gift. A token effort may be all that’s required if they are getting spoiled by a husband (absolutely not a given, I get that), Whereas I get a better present if I know they may lack stuff under the tree.

Ted27 · 29/11/2021 17:41

@Coronawireless

being 50 and single does not mean she doesnt have young children. I did at 50

PinkLadyFriday · 29/11/2021 18:42

Wow thanks everyone the last time I checked there were a couple of responses. I’ll read all of these.
She’s 50, child free (not less!!), great fun tee totaller who loves travel. Budget about £50.

I don’t think being 50 is old at all! I’m older.

Take her to a show or concert she'd love to see.

Buy her membership of somewhere she'd like to go regularly - a gallery, a cinema, theatre

FrazzledY9Parent · 29/11/2021 19:03

I am knocking on 50, single, and don't drink. Presents I have loved or would love include:

Olverum bath oil
Leach pottery
Celtic and Co slippers
A really beautiful bunch of flowers
A Lamy fountain pen and a Leuchturm notebook

I follow a hedgehog rescue on Twitter and they advise people against buying those wicker hedgehog houses. A less pretty but more solid wooden box like this one is what they recommend.

Dontbeme · 29/11/2021 20:38

@Classica ah okay, I didn't know that it wasn't suitable.

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/11/2021 20:39

Ask her what she would like (I’m 58, would really appreciate being asked. I have pretty much everything I need but I do have a couple of modest wants)).

Only learnt it myself recently. Twitter can be an education! Smile

Scarves are for 80 year olds!

Though I'm not I yet 50 and don't know what I'd do with one of those Jonathan Adler pills.

I would suggest cashmere socks from the White Company, an Acqua di Parma diffuser, a rampant rabbit, some fabulous books, a couple of really nice glasses depending on her favourite drink eg cut glass Dartington tumblers or gin glasses, a book token for her nearest independent bookshop, workout gear from Sweaty Betty or Nike (can't go wrong with a vest, or a good pair of leggings), cashmere fingerless gloves, violet creams from Fortnums...

Catcrazy83 · 30/11/2021 00:13

Does she like chocolate, what about a trip to a chocolate factory?

KosherDill · 30/11/2021 00:16

@TheYearOfSmallThings

I am also intrigued by the idea that a single 50 year old has specific gift needs!

As though she's Miss Marple!

And what does her relationship status have to do with it?

Peakypolly · 30/11/2021 00:21

I'm that age and would love comedy or gig tickets, could you go with her?
I also have asked for a scarf and candles, though I am about as far away from Miss Marple as possible.

Yes, this. It's as though people want to sneer at some qualities (gentle!! Ha ha!!) so they can stealth boast about how bold, tasteful and young-at-heart they are.

Well, she could have said "for my friend who likes poetry, baking pastry and bird watching" rather than focusing on age and marital status.
LindaEllen · 30/11/2021 10:21

@TubbyCustards

God I'd hate to receive a jigsaw, tea selection or a tote bag. You do realise that 50 is hardly in your dotage right?!

OP, with nothing much to go on in your op, I can only suggest what I've recently received for my birthday ... doesn't involve afternoon tea or a wildlife photo though Grin

Jonathan Adler acrylic pill
Hermes lipstick in orange brûlée
Dior bath oil
Diptique snow globe

And I'm 31 and would love to receive all of those things! :D
