My sons 1st Birthday is this Boxing Day. Obviously, he won’t have a clue but I’m just wondering what people do for their children who have a birthday close to Christmas. I want to make sure he knows his birthday is important and keep Christmas/birthday separate. Any traditions or celebration ideas? Smile

My ds has a boxing day birthday. We make a nice birthday cake (don't bother with a Christmas cake), put up a happy birthday banner and last year had lots of balloons which he loved. The most difficult part is how long he has to wait for presents as it is almost a year for him whereas most people will have their birthday to break up the wait for Christmas. We often do a couple of little gifts at Easter and Halloween. My ds is young but little things like ensuring he doesn't have joint birthday and Christmas gifts, and always using birthday or non-Christmas wrapping paper for his birthday is important to us. We also let him choose his favourite dinner and lunch to have that day. We haven't worked out when to do birthday parties yet (this is the first year we're planning one)- whether it would be best to do it in the summer or in Jan. So far he seems happy with a boxing day birthday, hopefully that will continue.

Family member has Xmas day birthday. They have a birthday tree and celebrations for the first half of the day, Xmas for the second.

We have a 2nd smaller celebration on 26th June, which we call DS half birthday Grin nothing extravagant, a small gift and a comic etc with dinner of his choice.

I had a Christmas Eve baby. The rule was that all Christmas prep had to be finished by lunch time then it was birthday. We always did a Christmas Eve afternoon birthday party when he was younger. Usually the whole class and always really well attended. Cards up, Birthday paper, no sharing birthday/Christmas presents. He always loved his birthday. Once he'd outgrown parties we'd go out for the afternoon and we'd eat our evening meal out together
