Tips for a make-your-own stair garland

So for years I’ve really fancied a lovely stair garland but they are expensive as they seem to be about 9ft long then you’d want a couple of them to go down the bannister.

I should say that I live in a boring new build home with a straight handrail - nothing fancy or exciting.

Can anyone share some ideas on cheaper ways to create one myself? Has anyone seen any reasonably priced lengths of the main garland anywhere which I could decorate myself?

Also any tips welcome from those who have done this before 😃

Thanks in advance!

That's what I've done in the past - bough plain green garlands and then added the decor myself. I've added holly before as well, that looks nice and bulks it out before you add the finishing touches.

Sorry that this is not really what you asked for but ...... I have these from M&S on my stairs and I love them, the lights are battery and have a timer so they come on at the same time each day, I just joined a few together, attach to the spindles with a few cable ties and they look fab. I've had them for 3 years and they are still perfect - can't wait to put them up next week!

We just wrap some nice tinsel around ours.

Fake wreaths are usually a garland curled round and clipped in place. I've bought one from Homesense, taken it apart using pliers and added my own lights and decorations in the past. Cost about £10 for a fairly plain one that looked like pine v. £30+ for a garland.

To make one from greenery you need sturdy cord doubled up that you then wire bunches of greenery to, overlapping them to hide the wire and stem ends. Remember to leave enough cord free at either end to tie the garland on with/make a loop to tie it on with ribbon.

Christmastimeuk have a few. This is the cheapest, but a bit sparse maybe. They have some other 18' ones for a bit more.

I got a prelit one from them a few years ago and it's doing well. I just clip it on with cable ties and then hang baubles on it. Mine is in the pic

Thank you to all of you for these tips! I’ve got a few options to look up now.

@iknowimcoming funnily enough I have one of these from M&S for my hall unit but figured I’d need to buy two or three of them for the stairs which could get expensive….

@WeAreTheHeroes I’ve literally just been in home bargains and spotted a massive plain lit wreath which appeared to be just a garland woven round and round so that might actually be a solution. It looked pretty cheap too. Thanks for this idea!

I bought one from the range a few years ago. I add holly and ivy that I get from my garden, fairy lights and eucalyptus.
