Ideas Needed - Advent Calendar 24 days of giving

The past few months we have been thinking of ways of giving, we’ve been donating to charity shops and moving forward we will be giving to our local Friends of the Homeless / Basic Banks centre. This is something we will be looking to do on a regular basis, not just at Christmas time.

But this year (and each year moving forward) I would like to fill our wooden advent calendar with 24 ‘gifts of giving’ notes rather than chocolate, so that each day me and my DS (he’s nearly 3) do something good/give something back.

So far, I have:

  1. Go shopping and donate to our local food bank / basic bank
  2. Choose 3 of DS’s books to donate to charity
  3. Donate blankets / pet food to local RSPCA
  4. Shoe Box Appeal (may be too late for this year)
  5. Donate to SANDS charity (close to my heart)
  6. Feed the ducks at local pond on cold day
  7. Donate 2 new toys to local present appeal

Some gifts of giving only need to be small, but I’d love other ideas!

Thanks

You could also do (weather permitting) a small clean up of your local area. As in, giving back to wildlife and nature?

Lovely ideas - i love doing stuff like this with my kids some of our ideas…

Make and put out a bird feeder (toilet roll, peanut butter + seeds or fat ball type ones)

Send some undies to Smalls for All

Colouring books/pencils to local hospitals childrens ward

Smile at everyone you see day

Paint some rocks with positive messages and hide them on a walk

Clear leaves for neighbours/something helpful

Plant a tree (with forestry scheme or an actual tree)

Donate outgrown but decent shoes to somewhere like Sals Shoes

Make Christmas ornaments (salt dough, paper snowflakes, handprint reindeer etc) to give to family

Post a card/picture to someone

Have a look to see if you have a local hygiene bank to donate some items to them

Also have a look for any local appeals from women’s refuges and items for refugee appeals

Buy a meal for a key worker - million meals/Uber eats (not sure if they are still doing this)

Look for a giving tree in a local shop (dunelm near us did this last year) or a wish list local organisation - school/animal

Fresh produce for local animal rescue - donkey sanctuary take carrots and ginger biscuits, our local Guinea pig rescue loves veggies

Invite an elderly neighbour round for tea/lunch.

Take a neighbour's dog for a walk.

Litter pick on your road/at the park.

Make cookies to give to your neighbours.

My DD's school does reverse advent calendars, has things like say 3 kind things, help prepare a meal, help tidy up/make bed, give someone you love a hug, write a Thankyou letter. I like the idea of adding some environmental things - litter picking, meat free day, recycling, make a bug hotel, bird feeder, decorate recyclable Christmas wrapping paper. You could split up some donations, so alongside food have a day to donate toiletries or nappies to food bank.
