Electronic chess set for a beginner

Hi,

My 8yo DD has just learnt to play chess so I’d like to get her an electronic chess set.

Can anyone recommend one please?

The only one I can see is the Lexibook but they have some bad reviews with people saying that the pieces are too light and fall over easily. There are two versions and I can’t work out the difference.

Does anyone have one of these and find it ok? Thanks

I wouldn't bother with an electric chess set but an annual subscription to Chess Kid would be much better, less fun to open on the day but hours of fun. My DD is really good from playing on Chess Kid and it's safe.

We have one but it belonged to DH and is gathering dust.

Thanks, my DD doesn’t use any devices like phone or tablet at home so she would actually use an electronic set.

What does chess kid do?

Piggy42 · 25/11/2021 18:30

I’ve tried looking for one before and I don’t think they’re really a thing anymore because of apps on smartphones and tablets.

I think you’re right.

Chess Kid is amazing, you pay a subscription but they can play anytime and there is tutoring etc. My DD knew how to play chess at home, then her school recommended lichess and chess kid, we went for Chess Kid, she has become really good and is now in the school chess squad. She started about a year ago.

Out of interest, why does your daughter not go on any devices? Surely she has to for school, Times Table Rockstar etc.

Personal choice and no she doesn’t - our school doesn’t use any of those. Any home learning is non computer based.

Wow! Do you not feel that will hold her back?

festivefuschias · 28/11/2021 19:55

How? She’s exceptionally bright, no concerns whatsoever. Uses technology in school where required and has no issues. It’s really not that complicated to use and she does plenty of non technology based activities at home, it’s not like she sits at home doing nothing Confused

There's this one but I've no idea if it's any good. I had a SciSys one years ago that was great but I don't think they still exist.

festivefuschias · 28/11/2021 22:57

Thank you. I think I’m going to go for that one.
