My lovely mum said she would buy mine from the farm shop. tesco ones start at about £11 for a small one i think.

mylittleponey · 15/12/2007 21:50

that's alot of money!

coldtits · 15/12/2007 21:51

I'm not having a turkey, i think it's fowl.

Boom Boom!

Seriously, we are having lamb.

UnquietDad · 15/12/2007 21:52

I'm sure they are cheaper in Morrison's.

Just a guess.

Skribble · 15/12/2007 21:52

I am just getting a medium sized chicken, I prefer chicken to turkey meat anyway.

ColdasIce · 15/12/2007 21:53

Got a turkey crown with stuffing and bacon topping from Aldi £9.99

fingerwoman · 15/12/2007 21:54

i'd pay that for a big, organic turkey that has been reared well.
only I'm vegetarian so it's nut roast all round this year

Skribble · 15/12/2007 21:55

Turkey crowns are really good value.

Alambil · 15/12/2007 22:44

Turkey butterfly - 100% meat, absolutely no bones so will all be used. £10ish and will see us over loads of meals.

Alambil · 15/12/2007 22:44

oops forgot to say it's from our local butcher - love to keep business local

WhenScoobyGotStuckUpTheChimney · 15/12/2007 22:45

Ew no not turkey we are having Lamb!

Marina · 15/12/2007 22:45

I think all of M & S' poultry is now free-range. Birds that have had a reasonable quality of life cost more.

scrummyfairyontopofthetree · 15/12/2007 22:46

Turkey crowns start at about £10 in Morrisons and they look delic.

Myrrhcy · 15/12/2007 22:49

Marina is right.

We paid just under that for a very small organic turkey from M&S about 3 years ago. Was worth it tbh.

lovey · 16/12/2007 17:28

I think thats a fab price this year...Im paying £60

KbearingGiftsWeTraverseAfar · 16/12/2007 17:31

£23 for 15lb turkey from local butcher.

How much did the £32 turkey weigh? That sounds about right for M&S for about a 15lb turkey.

Niecie · 16/12/2007 17:41

I am paying £55 for a free range, organic, local turkey from a farm shop.

The family reckon they can taste the difference between one of those and a frozen one. I can't but don't want to spoil their lunch if they really can.

I didn't want to rely on getting one from Sainsbury's as they don't let you order and last year all they had left, when we went, was one of those turkey breast joints. It was lovely and there was no waste but it was still a lot more than £10 although it was quite big. Also my father likes the leg meat so a crown wouldn't do for him.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 16/12/2007 17:42

I think it's more shocking that they can cost as little £9.

Poor bloody birds. Thank god they've been put out of their misery.

Niecie · 16/12/2007 17:43

By the way, wasn't there a concern that there wasn't going to be much turkey around this year after they had to kill so many of Bernard Matthews turkeys over Avian flu and also due to losses from the flooding? Or am I mis-remembering?

It would explain the prices a little.

manchita · 16/12/2007 17:51

I would rather pay more in a shop that treats its animal fairly well than less for a battery bird

donnie · 16/12/2007 18:01

ours will be around £60 from our local butcher.

SpikeandDru · 16/12/2007 18:02

I've ordered a free range turkey from a local farm - it'll be about 11lb but am expecting to pay about £40. Money is tight at the moment but DH gets paid next week and we are treating ourselves and my parents. Also I cannot bring myself to buy an intensively reared one. In the same way I only ever buy free range chicken - it's more expensive but it works out cheap because I get at least three meals out of it.

Magrat · 16/12/2007 18:06

waitrose select farm turkeys are about £18
for a medium one (about 5kg)

bagpuss · 16/12/2007 18:14

I paid £28 for a large (serves 7-10) turkey crown from M&S last week. I was a bit but we had the same last year and it was really lovely and we go a few meals from the left overs.

Swedes2Turnips1 · 16/12/2007 23:57

I paid £60 last year for a local farm-reared organic rare breed turkey. It tasted good but I am not sure there was any difference between it and say a £30 free-range organic turkey.
