Can anyone suggest a good Christmas present for a 4 year old? He's in Reception at school, I don't know what he likes or dislikes!

His family are visiting us during the Christmas period, I last saw him 2 years ago.when obviously he had very different likes!

I want to spend around £20. Any ideas?

at that age you can rarely go wrong with a play doh or duplo/lego set.
I think this is a great gift! -

ZubinB · 24/11/2021 05:13

actually that fish tank is maybe a little old for 4/5, unless parents help....
this sort of thing might be better:

@ZubinB that creator set is fantastic, dd 4 would love it. Would need help and if it had an octopus it would be perfect.

There are some great Lego sets for 4+ that are more detail than Duplo but simpler than Lego. Or a basic box of bricks

Just over £20 but have seen it around £20 in some places.

My go to recommendation is a saxoflute. Or, the less noisy version, tubations. By quercetti. Great toy.

angelopal · 24/11/2021 06:15

My 4 year old loves kinetic sand.

careerchangeperhaps · 24/11/2021 07:47

If the child is staying with you, I'd avoid messy / crafty gifts as it's awkward to do these when you're not at home and a 4 year old will likely want to get started on anything they get given. Likewise anything with tiny pieces that can get lost and left behind.
If they're just visiting for the day, then it's not such an issue.

WhatonEarth1 · 24/11/2021 08:29

Kid Knex
Hungry Hippos and a giant floor puzzle
Marble run

ZubinB · 24/11/2021 09:02

Bugs In The Kitchen is also a great boardgame!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/11/2021 09:55

Thanks for all these suggestions. He is visiting for the day so can take his present home. He lives in a very small flat with his mum so not sure if there is enough floor space for some of these.

I love the idea of lego - mine were obsessed with it - but wasn't sure if he fell between stages - too old for Duplo, too young for complicated lego. So thanks for the suggestions on here, he might love the fish tank.

Lego juniors sets work well for his age.

TheKeatingFive · 24/11/2021 10:20

Look for the lego junior sets, 4+

Hungry hippos has always been a big hit in our house, so second that

Fallagain · 24/11/2021 10:28

Orchard game
Melissa and doug toys
Learning resources
These are my go to brands

careerchangeperhaps · 24/11/2021 11:02

@EmmaGrundyForPM We have the fish tank and it's far too difficult for a 4 year old. My 9 year old needed help with some bits (both understanding the instructions and physically putting the bits together).
Look at the Lego juniors sets. Perfect for this age group.

TheFairPrincess · 24/11/2021 11:07

Mine had a lot of fun last year (when they were 5 and 3) with orchard games, we got the pizza one and the shopping list one :) Will get another this year now he is 4.

My son has just turned 4 and has specifically requested a dinosaur that walks and makes noise.

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/11/2021 11:23

I second hungry hippos. It's a huge hit in our house

Or playdough set / kinetic sand

Hot wheels cars would probably be appreciated

My dds really love their megasketcher which might be something he doesn't already have

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/11/2021 11:24

I remember Hungry Hippos from when my dc were small!

I love the suggestion of Tubations - I'd never heard of them but they look great. I don't know how popular I'd be if I bought him the Saxophone one!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone

Another advocate of Hungry Hippos here!

Newdad19 · 24/11/2021 11:28

I was going to suggest kinetic sand as wel and not too messy

YahooTheMilkshake · 24/11/2021 11:52

One of the small 4+ legp sets.
Adds to a collection rather than finding storage for something new. The 4+ are easier to build

DGFB · 24/11/2021 11:57

Hot Wheels
Or a game

Catabogus · 24/11/2021 14:14

Saxoflute is amazing! My 10yo is still playing with it fairly regularly. We’ve had 6 years of continuous play for about £20

Yeah, we had the same here. It's why I recommend it. Such a brilliant toy.

My mum left an Amazon review of it, because she couldn't believe how good it was. She's been dead a couple of years now and every now and again I go and find the review because it's is so my mum, and I love reading it! I think she says something about her 2 year old grandson. He's 16 now! And when he was about 11, he out it away so that his baby brother would have the joy of it. We still have it!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/11/2021 14:49

@JuneOsborne was your mums name Peggy? In which case I've just found the review. It's lovely.

OP posts:
JuneOsborne · 24/11/2021 14:57

Yeah, that was the name she used for the review! Peggy Babcock! (Not her real name!) You can see why I go back to read it every now and again, can't you? It's her birthday tomorrow, god I miss her! Glad you liked her review. She was a bit nutty, and I think it just about comes out in the way she wrote it!

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 24/11/2021 16:13

If they live in a small flat I’d avoid anything big. Even hungry hippos is in a pretty big box, plus he may already have it. Hits with reception age boys, anything PJ Mask related, transformers, cars and power rangers. Stick to the basics, boys like these things. Although some boys like crafts not all do. There is a good chance he watches all of these on tv so will like them.

Or ask the mum as she will know best.
