Christmas gift for male colleague/friend

Darkpheonix · 23/11/2021 18:22

Hi all

My teams want to get one of our Senior Directors a Christmas gift. He lives very far away, so we need to post it or have it delivered.

He is a really lovely colleague and supported our team tirelessly and is on friendly terms with many of us. He has always been on hand for mu team to contact him directly for advice and guidance. Either directly about work or their progression.

We wouldn't usually do a gift, but he also leaving when we finish for Christmas. He will be very much missed.

He is early 40s, doesn't have hobbies as he is either at work or with his son.

I know someone bought him a Jeremy Clarkson 'smells like bollocks' candle and he found that funny. But also lives near JC farm shop and has visited so I am guessing anything he really wanted he would have bought then.

We want to get him something to remember the team by. But I can't say I know him well enough to know if his favourite wine is, as an example.

We have a budget of £200-£300.

I do know he does like candles but (and I might be wrong) but buying someone some Jo Malone candles, feels a bit to intimate for a gift from colleagues.

I would not buy candles for a male colleague!

How about some nice whisky? Or a small hamper with nice red wine, crackers and cheese?

Avarua · 23/11/2021 18:26

Bottle of very nice single malt whiskey. Eg Lagavaulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg etc

Avarua · 23/11/2021 18:27

X-post :)

So glad you said you wouldn't buy the candles. I thought I might be being odd about it, but it didn't feel right.

Yes, a bottle of whiskey sounds like an idea. I am 100% sure he drinks. I think we had a cheese and biscuits conversatation a while ago.

Thank you.

That's quite a tricky one! I'd probably go with booze, but if you don't know what he likes that's also tricky... I've been given cookbooks by colleagues, but I think this was because I'd discussed enjoying cooking. Can't really do jewellery...

Hmmmm maybe something to do with your industry? Or cashmere scarf and gloves or something?

Honestly if he likes candles but him the Jo Malone Orange Bitters Deluxe candle £130 it literally smells of Christmas and any fan will thank you!

I would consider that with a £100 Jo Malone voucher for him to treat himself after Christmas, a bottle of vintage port and a selection of chocolates.

I now want that candle myself 🤣 I know he likes them because he was on the phone when I got some candles delivered and he was talking about them and wanted to know exactly which i had got (not Jo Malone but he did mention that brand)

Vouchers may be a good idea.

Could you select something local to you - e.g. gin/beer/whiskey from a local brewery to send him. So it's more personal than a plain bottle of whiskey?

PenelopeVonDelius · 23/11/2021 18:34

Oh! My dh is an engineer.

Asking him

That's a great idea. Maybe we could get some good quality glasses to go with them? Or is that a bit naff?

@PenelopeVonDelius thank you. 😊

My DH loves a jo Malone candle, body wash, cologne etc and would view that as such a treat.

Even from colleagues? That's quite interesting to think about x

I don’t think it would bother him in all honesty, especially as a leaving gift.
Darkpheonix · 23/11/2021 19:05

@Jumpingintochristmas thank you.

There's some really good ideas so thank you all. I will get the teams to vote on it tomorrow and see how far the budget goes.

What about an experience like a flying lesson, helicopter, sea plane for balloon flight or something like driving a flashy car at silverstone ?

Can you contact his DW/partner and ask them if he likes whisky/gin etc?

If he likes cheese a cheese hamper with a good bottle of port/red wine?

Get him a funny calendar made up with all the team so he doesn't forget you!

If he's into Star Wars or anything g a big Lego set?

If he likes cooking a cooking lesson or vouchers for a very good restaurant near him, or vouchers for one of those celebrity chef meals delivered.

A flight to the island of Barra where he'll land on the beach with a night booked at a local b&b (better than hotels)!

Vouchers for a local travel agents or Easybreaks so he can book a weekend away.

But I also like the Jo Malone ideas!
