Present for 50 year old man

I need to buy a token (maybe £30 ish) present for a man who is around 50 and I basically know nothing about. I am at an utter loss as I have no idea what he likes/doesn't like. Any really generic ideas would be very welcome!

I bought a cashmere hat from Uniqlo for a 70 year old man today for £25.

Other suggestions:
Gloves/scarf (as above)
Steel water bottle (eg chillys)
Valet tray (for men to unload the crap from their pockets)

Cashmere hat a great idea.

The Spy and the Traitor by Ben Macintyre.

Box of really nice chocolates or biscuits from somewhere posh. Or some nice jams, honey etc.

I have a 50 something husband, and if you bought him jam he would think you had lost the plot!

I'd buy him booze.

JaneJeffer · 23/11/2021 02:29

DH would love a pot of jam!

Maybe give a bottle of brandy.

Bit more information required. Is this man known to you as in a distant relation, friend or secret santa? Do you have friends in common that you can ask for clues? This will give us more ideas on what gifts to suggest.

Cinema gift card
CK underpants (depending!)
A month by month stargazing guide
Swiss Army Knife
Uniqlo heat tech vests / under T shirts
Gin
Bison Grass vodka, or Grey Goose

Unfortunately I don't have much more information, he's the partner of a family member but they don't live together and we usually see her without him. It's been so many years now with Covid that I can't even remember whether he drinks or not Blush. I wouldn't usually get him anything but they're coming to ours this year so it seems churlish to make no effort whatsoever. If I ask her outright she'll be very polite and say no need to get anything so maybe I need to start some seemingly innocent lines of enquiry...

Hat or gloves.
What job does he do?
Chocolates like green and blacks
Quality socks.

Don’t buy him booze if you know nothing about him. He might not be a drinker.

Well, if they’re visiting you, it would be perfectly reasonable to ask the family member what he drinks - so you can provide it for their visit. Then you’ll know if he drinks alcohol or not.

Then you can buy him some whisky. Or vodka. Or whatever.
