9 year old son not asking for much! Need ideas!

My 9 year old DS has only put one thing on his Santa letter-Pokémon cards. He’s been big into gaming for 3/4 years and that’s his main hobby but he’s already got a lot of the things needed for that and hasn’t shown any interest in new games. He says he doesn’t want/need anything else. He used to be into Lego but not so much any more. Im glad he’s not asking for stuff for the sake of it but I’m feeling a bit sad that he seems not to have much interest in toys or anything else beyond games consoles and his laptop :( We’d like to get him more than just Pokémon cards but struggling with ideas! Any suggestions much appreciated!

My boys love pokemon.
I'm getting them a switch but also
Guiness book of records
Football boots
Pokemon Encyclopedia

Crumblinginside · 21/11/2021 23:08

I've just seen Wicked Uncle website recommended and there's nice stuff on it.

MzHz · 21/11/2021 23:09

I use a site called wicked uncle- it’s brilliant for off the wall and original ideas!

My ds is a teen now, so a bit past a lot of it, but it’s perfect for the younger kids I know

MzHz · 21/11/2021 23:10

Ha ha @Crumblinginside! Great minds think alike Grin

SlB09 · 21/11/2021 23:11

What about experiences instead? Like a yearly pass to somewhere he loves going? Also be chuffed to bits that your son has said he 'doesn't need/want anything else,', what a fantastic attitude from a young boy x

Crumblinginside · 21/11/2021 23:12

Grincan't claim credit I saw it earlier on here

Crumblinginside · 21/11/2021 23:15

Just thought.
Could you get him trainers or nice tracksuits?
Cinema pass
Decent bean bag and lamp
One year I adopted an animal (wwf)

It's hard when they grow out of toys.
Mine have grown out of a lot of them

Cheerfulcharlie · 21/11/2021 23:15

Fact books - infopedia, car books, atlas, food facts, body facts , joke book etc
Roller boots
Something for his room - desk light? fleecey throw? clock? Cactus?
Pencil case
Water bottle
Hair gel /putty
Wash bag
Towel
Rucksack

Does he like the outdoors at all? Or if not, could something lure him out? Mine's a similar age and personality and was a big fan of the year he got a kit of outdoor things like a fire steel and whittling knife, head torch plus other bits and pieces, I think it felt really grown up.

My DS 8 sounds similar. He loves Pokemon, Minecraft and gaming. His main present is a Raspberry Pi 400 which we are going to set up together and use to learn some coding and general PC skills. He is also getting a Microbit robot which could be a standalone gift option as you code in a web browser.

He is saving the money from his nana to buy Pokemon Arceus Switch game at the end of January. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl have just come out but they are Gameboy reversions and don't look as good. He's also just decided he wants the Animal Crossing DLC which is only £16, prior to that I was planning on buying him a Nintendo e-card so he could buy a DLC or Mine coins when he wanted.

Otherwise he's getting a Pokemon cuddly toy (Build a Bear do some amazing ones, with outfits/sound effects), Pokemon 3D jigsaw, general books and a couple of board games. Plus a electronic nerd gun target set (he got two guns for his birthday).

Also you could look at something for the garden. We've had a lot of use out of our Decathlon tennis net, archery set and pop up basketball set.

Bedsheets4knickers · 21/11/2021 23:34

We've just had this discussion with our two , both autumn bdays so theirs nothing they want or need . We've agreed with them that if they don't want anything We'l do token gifts and book a week at centre parcs for the summer . They are both happy with this .

nanbread · 21/11/2021 23:44

We're getting my same age DC vouchers for an activity centre where you can do things like bushcraft, air rifle shooting, archery etc. Decathlon also do an archery set which looks good.

Thanks everyone loads of great ideas here for me to look into!

How about a games locker? www.smythstoys.com/uk/en-gb/video-games-and-tablets/gaming-merchandise/official-xbox-gaming-locker/p/199687 If you Google you'll find different ones.

Thumb stick covers for controllers: www.amazon.co.uk/Controller-Hikfly-Compatible-Non-Slip-Silicone-Camo-BlueRed/dp/B08MJ71DJT/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?crid=2L7979C4505MI&keywords=Thumb+covers+controller&sprefix=thumb+covers+controller+%2Caps%2C78&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1637580462&sr=8-5

Game themed duvet set/clock/blanket/pjs/tshirt/chair

Coloured strip LED lights

You can get metal pokemon cards from Etsy and Ali Express which look pretty cool

This sounds like a far better plan than buying a load of stuff he doesn't want because you want him to have a big pile to open. What a waste of money and resources.

If he doesn't want any things right now, offer an experience or holiday and if he doesn't want that, put the money you want to spend in a savings account for him.

Likely he'll want a new gaming computer at some point and that will cost £££s, so any money saved now can go towards that. Or when he wants expensive trainers, clothes or other things when he's a teenager.

Weusedtobegiants · 22/11/2021 12:22

My nearly 9 year old nephew has asked for tickets for a gaming expo event in Birmingham next year, he’s looking forward to seeing what new games are coming out, he’s already decided on the games he would like to take and trade on the bring and buy table.

Omg my 9yo would love this - can you remember where it was from?
Newdad19 · 22/11/2021 17:36

As he is into Pokémon I would buy him the new Pokémon game that's our last weekend

Bimblybomeyelash · 22/11/2021 17:41

All the nine year olds I know are getting outdoorsy stuff.

Penknife
Compass
Flint and steel
Binoculars
Bow and arrows
Whittling kits
Kite
Head torches for camping

I'm in exactly the same position with my 9 year old son!! His main (almost only) interest is playing Roblox on his tablet. He's getting some Robux and then some Roblox merchandise (hoody and annual). He does enjoy sports so I thought I'd get him badminton rackets, shuttlecock and the net so he can play in the garden. He's recently got in to reading at bedtime - I read a chapter then he reads another chapter in bed so I've got him quite a few books (How to Train Your Dragon, Ben Miller books, some Roald Dahl and David Baddiel). I've got him 2 pairs of warm pyjamas (gaming design). He quite likes card games and board games if I can drag him off his gadgets so I've got Junior Cluedo, Top Trumps and a Pizza game (can't remember the name!). He's also asked for some fossils!

SallyWD · 22/11/2021 17:54

Oh yes, I nearly forgot! He's also getting a fitness watch and several straps in different colours.
