Christmas books for grown ups?

I’m looking for inspiration for Christmas books to read during December, both for me and for my Mum
Neither of us have ever read Christmas themed books before but after caring for and then losing my Nan very recently both have found ourselves turning to the rubbish channel 5 Xmas films to turn our minds off (both separately, we’ve only discussed that we both seem to be doing this today) so I thought a cheesy Xmas love story book might also be nice
I always buy her an advent calendar so am looking to giving it to her on the 1st Dec with this, but I have no idea which are any good and/or not too sentimental
Can anyone suggest some?

What is the name of that Carole Matthew's book please?

LH1987 · 22/11/2021 21:38

@muldersspeedos - with love at Christmas

Christmas at Fairacre by Miss Read - I'm normally a dark and violent psychological thriller type of reader but I've read this every year at Christmas for maybe 40 years now and it gets me every time

Is 'Skipping Christmas' the idea behind 'Christmas with the Kranks'?

bookworm14 · 22/11/2021 21:56

Another nice Christmassy book is Going Home by Harriet Evans.

Yes it is. It’s quite a short book and, the copy I had at least, was fairly small too - smaller than your standard paperback

The League Against Christmas by Michael Curtin, funny, clever, witty, farcical and just a touch dark. Available on Kindle £3:99.
If you’ve not read any Curtin before you are in for a treat, for he is an Irish national treasure!

Elin Hilderbrand’s Winter Street series!

Wonderful book. Also love Nigel Slaters ‘The Christmas Chronicles’.

Heidi Swain has written some really sweet romantic Christmas theme books. Definitely look at these. And thank you for reminding me, I'll now buy another for some lovely Christmas escapism.

@LH1987 I love that Carole Matthews book and re-read it every Christmas!

Niffler92 · 23/11/2021 08:59

Not exactly cheery but Christmasy

Christmas is Murder: A chilling short story collection www.amazon.co.uk/dp/0751581771/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_C8DXEZ2VNV3QDWZRX7EY?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Sainsburys book selection always has a good selection of Christmas fiction. I bought one for my mom last year.

The Christmas Murder Game by Alexandra Benedict is the Kindle deal of the day today. A snip at only 99 pence for a well plotted mystery.

InTheCludgie · 24/11/2021 12:43

AdaColeman I like the sound of The Christmas Murder Game, have bought myself a Kindle copy of it

The Perfect Present by Karen Swan - ski lodges, charm bracelets, cosy farmhouse Christmas

The Great Christmas Knit Off - can't remember the author but its about a woman who massively balls up at work and runs away to her mates pub in a rural village. There's a dishy doctor, a run down wool shop in need of renovating and a huge amount of comfort food consumed. It's very sweet

Hercule Poirot and The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding.

Cold Comfort Farm at Christmas.

Noel Streatfeild’s Christmas stories.

Christmas Pudding by Nancy Mitford.

People speak well of Miss Read’s A Country Christmas, but I’ve not read it.
