What to eat Christmas Eve for dinner?

I have no idea. I want something different to what I cook daily but easy. Last year I did tapas but this year I have my mother here and it will go down like a lead balloon. Any ideas?

We used to have fish pie when the children were younger, we then changed to meet ball lasagne. Tiny meatballs and tiny bits of mozzarella between the pasta layers. No bechamel.

We use to get take away every year, then one year I got food poisoning and was ill for days. So then on it was party food and pizza from different shops, tbh I'd eat a cardboard box but everyone here would be eating it but not loving it and last year I thought yeah it's pretty gank so this year what I'm doing is having Christmas morning breakfast on Christmas Eve, every year I buy in loads for breakfast and everyone is stuffed but we do enjoy a decent mixed grill, so it's rashers, sausages, pudding, mushrooms, potato farls, beans, chips, fried eggs or scrambled and whatever else the kids decide they fancy.

We do an Alpine supper. Pierrade (hot stone, cooking meat) for carnivores, cheese fondue for veggies and raclettes, (little shovels with potatoes cheese and optional ham) for everyone except our dear vegan DIL for whom DH makes something that she would enjoy. Salad etc for everyone.
We have it in the conservatory as the table seats 12 and I can lay the dining room table well in advance of the next day's Christmas dinner.
Very popular with the whole family.
This year our DIL's mum will be with us. She is from Brazil so this should be a novel experience for her..

Takeaway fish and chips with lots of salt and vinegar Smile

Pacidove · 18/11/2021 18:25

We always have Ham, Egg and Chips and watch the Snowman

PeaceInMyLife · 18/11/2021 18:27

We don't have the same every year.

Sometimes we go to my dms for a German Christmas Dinner on Christmas eve.

I've done a curry night before and invited all the family over.

Sometimes we've gone out for a meal.

Sometimes it's nibbles and fizz just us at home.

This year I'll probably do a cheese board and dips platter.

Squidthing · 18/11/2021 18:30

We did baked camenbert and chutneys with some crusty bread last year. The kids had cheese on toast.

Youknownothingsnow · 18/11/2021 18:30

We have home cooked brunch and then out for dinner at around 5/6pm and have two or three courses. No washing up and cheaper than eating out on Christmas Day. Then home for nibbles/cheeses if we have room!

LunaLoveFood · 18/11/2021 18:30

We get a takeaway!

That sounds lovely , could you post ur recipe please[/quote]

Of course, it's this one. For beef broth I just use Bovril. The meat just falls apart and can be served with mash or jacket potatoes or just crusty bread.

We are having a party food buffet for Christmas Day this year, so I'll probably make this myself for Christmas Eve.

stirlingway · 18/11/2021 18:40

Tartiflette, simple but delicious 😋

thetwofridas · 18/11/2021 18:47

Like lots of other PP we do nibbles in front of the television! Spring rolls, mozzarella bites, baked camembert with bread, mini quiches etc. It's a family tradition every year to pick out all the nibbles we want beforehand. One of my favourite parts on Christmas and it's not even on the actual day!

nocoolnamesleft · 18/11/2021 18:49

Ham in coke. Very little work, tastes fab, yummy leftovers.

Dancingsmile · 18/11/2021 18:59

Fish and chips here

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/11/2021 20:05

I just do party food - sausage rolls, mini spring rolls, cheese straws, tempura prawns - stuff like that, that is easy to shove in the oven, when I’ve spent the day prepping for Christmas dinner.

DaisyWaldron · 18/11/2021 20:07

I like to go for plain simplicity before the feast, so we have lentil soup.

MintyGreenDream · 18/11/2021 20:09

Indian takeaway 😋

OtherPlans · 18/11/2021 20:11

Normally salmon as the following days are so meat/poultry based

VestaTilley · 18/11/2021 20:12

We always have fish pie, but cooked ham is traditional in many families.

delilahbucket · 18/11/2021 20:16

We go out for an early tea before going to panto but if we were in I would be doing a picky tea. Out would come the meats, cheeses and salads.

Palavah · 18/11/2021 20:22

Last year, Taste the Difference Salmon Wellington.

Palavah · 18/11/2021 20:23

*en croute. Wellington would be weird.

Charlieandlola · 18/11/2021 20:28

Fish !
In the past we’ve done Baked salmon , monkfish in bacon , fish pie , prawn curry, salmon en croute , last year we did M&S seafood platter with chips and salad which we will do again this year as it was easy , light and everyone enjoyed it .

containsnuts · 18/11/2021 20:29

Just any old random dinner. The evening is all about the nibbles: crisps, popcorn and hot chocolate to enjoy with a Christmas movie.

Worldwide2 · 18/11/2021 20:35

My partner is from a European country where they celebrate Xmas on Xmas eve. So it's a big sit down affair with 12 dishes, I love it. Plus I don't do any cooking - bonus!
