DM has just landed me with a request! She forgot she's seeing her friend (pretend aunt) and her daughter on Thursday and has a present for my aunt. However she forgot about needing a present for her daughter who is lovely abd who has helped both her mum cans mine out during covid. She's 56, likes reading, eating and drinking but quite fussy apparently. Quite well off and likes quality over tat. Not into make up, scarves etc. No idea of her likes/dislikes other than this (and that she likes going on lovely villa holidays and city breaks) as I've not seen her since we were kids!
So oh wise shoppers of Mumsnet, any ideas?!! DM can't use internet and can't get to shops till Thursday!

Budget £15 - £20. TIA

You would be able to get a bottle of champagne for between £17 & £22 - Nicolas Feuillette or similar (currently on offer at both) or Moet

I'd try Waitrose or Sainsburys - better to buy a brand on special offer than store brand for a gift

If you don't know someone's taste, I would say this is a v safe gift as always welcome/easily regifted

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 14/11/2021 22:09

Glad it's resolved!

I just wanted to add my voice to those who loathe scented candles. If anybody gave me one, it would be re-gifted.

I also read a lot but hardly ever use a bookmark. Can't see the point of them. I'd be gutted to get one for a present when I could have had a lovely box of chocolates or a nice bottle of wine for the same cost.

I love getting flowers. I can see it isn't ideal to be given flowers as a Christmas present five weeks before Christmas Grin but otherwise that would be ideal for me.

Tricky business, buying gifts for someone you don't know extremely well! And of course we see every week on MN that many people are useless at gift buying/giving even for their nearest and dearest.

headintheproverbial · 14/11/2021 22:32

Get her the Christmas Chronicles by Nigel Slater.

headintheproverbial · 14/11/2021 22:32

Or one of the beautifully bound penguin classics - even if she's read it, it's a classic and they look so lovely on a shelf. Pick it up in Waterstones.

MargosKaftan · 14/11/2021 22:38

Selection of hot sauces or chutneys. For that budget you can get a nice sets. Its not tat as its consumables.

MNHQ really need to promote the ‘See all OP’s posts’ button …

I appreciate that its been resolved but for twopennyworth as a kindle reader for holidays (what are they ?) & for chic lit I love a proper hardback book.

I adore raeding - its one of my fave things - I was bought the Poem for every day of the year - there is a version for every nightof the year too & I also seee that there is now also a Poet for every day of the year version too - as someone who has less time now I have a DS & who hasn't read muych poetry since college I have really enjoyed these

I do like candle, posh bath stuff etc but noon eever buys me books unless I nudge DH on behalf of DS when they are floundering

Myusername2015 · 14/11/2021 23:07

Too late now but a company like bookishly do gorgeous book themed gifts

tcjotm · 14/11/2021 23:13

If you’re against the book idea I’d go for a lovely calendar. Botanical, arty, whatever suits her best. Worst case she could hang it in the loo.

tcjotm · 14/11/2021 23:16

Oops, for once I didn’t view all OPs posts

I still want a fancy calendar if anyone is shopping for me 😂

Mrsmadevans · 14/11/2021 23:30

I know it has been decided but there are some fab suggestions here Smile

RobertaFirmino · 15/11/2021 00:31

Great choice, any reader would be pleased to be given a book token. Even though it's 'just a voucher', it seems more thoughtful than some generic tat.

A gift voucher for a little pick me up like a Indian head massage or a big box of chocolates or a nice bottle of gin!

EdmontinaDancesWithOphelia · 15/11/2021 07:05

Gin, maybe.

‘Nice’ gin for less than £20? Surely it would have to be a half bottle? Which looks a bit stingy.

I’m sure she’ll like what your mother has decided on, OP!

TasteTheMeatNotTheHeat · 15/11/2021 07:09

Surely it's got to be a book... Take a bit of time searching through newly published stuff

Gohugatree · 15/11/2021 07:15

Was coming on to say Persephone books but someone has beaten me to it. Beautiful, elegant editions, good women writers. And you could spend the rest on a bar of quality chocolate.

PeonyRose80 · 15/11/2021 07:32

The M&S gin bottle with the gold leaf clementine gin…. if she doesn’t like it she can always regift!

PeonyRose80 · 15/11/2021 07:33

It’s a licquor hence only £20

PeonyRose80 · 15/11/2021 07:34

Liqueur

EdmontinaDancesWithOphelia · 15/11/2021 08:11

Thinking about it, it’s really, really odd that there’s such a dearth of good quality, non-generic / not insultingly stereotypical things that a choosy, middle aged person might want as a gift, costing no more than £20.

It’s incredibly easy to list all the things one wouldn’t want as a gift - harder to think of things that would be welcome.

Most Folio Society books are more than £20 now, unless you stock up during the sales.

I adore the look of Persephone Books, and many of their titles are fabulous (Marghanita Laski’s ‘Little Boy Lost’ is one of the books of my life) but it worries me that they’re seen as the go to genteel present for apparently genteel middle aged ladies.

I like a particular type of wine and am unlikely to drink any outside that category. And decent spirits - always welcome - cost a lot more than that. Not forgetting that some people don’t drink. And don’t want to be inundated with chocolate.

There is almost certainly nothing in Boots that I want someone else to buy me. I buy most grooming / beauty products online - and even if Boots has cosmetics I use, I prefer to choose them myself.

Are there any magazine subscriptions within budget? Would have to be very obscure, otherwise I’d already have a subscription if I wanted one.

‘Nice’ soap from TK Maxx or a fancy perfume shop? Bit uninspired - unless Santa Maria Novella, and you wouldn’t get much there within budget. Candles, ditto.

Space NK used to have a good selection of neutral balms and unctions (haven’t stepped into any of their shops for years) but again - price!

Sports equipment? Difficult unless you know the person well.

Travel accessories? Generic, and nasty if cheap.

I really like a particular brand of linen tea towel - but you’d have to know where to order them from.

Bed linen impossible. One tiny towel pointless. I’m middle aged; I’m on top of household stuff and do not want random clutter.

As a pp said above, no clothes or accessories suitable as a gift would be within this price range. I often include something like a basic cotton t shirt in a Christmas stocking for family members - but from a 75 (?) year old woman to a 56 year old woman that would be a bit odd.

Garden stuff I prefer to choose myself.

I get coffee beans on subscription.

Very good, loose leaf, maybe single origin tea - this would actually be fine! One ‘posh’ teabag in a mug, Halloween Hmm … Okay from a child.

Extra virgin olive oil - fine.

Honey - fine.

I hate ready ground spices, no matter how expensive.

Beyond that, I can’t think of much that doesn’t get flung into the Ocado trolley.

Cheese! Order a decent wedge of prizewinning cheese. That would do. Grin

sashh · 15/11/2021 08:18

What does she drink? A couple of nice crystal glasses for whatever her tipple is.

EdmontinaDancesWithOphelia · 15/11/2021 08:28

Oh, sorry - I know the OP’s query has been solved. I’m just musing more generally … (So that no one can be left in any doubt that a Boots 3 for 2 is not acceptable!)

Rangoon · 15/11/2021 09:24

An herb in an attractive ceramic pot could be good. I'd like basil or parsley or coriander or really any green herb.
