Tinsel!

I love tinsel on my tree, and I also love the smell of it and how it feels. But most of my friends think it’s tacky. Are there any other tinsel-lovers on here?

Anyone familiar with the feminist board loves Tinsel.

picklemewalnuts · 13/11/2021 21:00

I have great fat garlands of tinsel across the door frames. Apart from that, everything is very tasteful!

ElfDragon · 13/11/2021 21:06

Love tinsel. I have it wound around the upright stair rods going all the way up through both sets of stairs in the house. All colours. I also have some that miraculously matches the playroom colours so well that it gets hung around the room.

No tinsel on the tree as it doesn’t really fit that well on there - I use bead chains on the tree instead. But the tree is in the playroom, so lots of tinsel around it, both around the walls and some tinsel ornaments around.

My step son looked at it all in horror and proclaimed it ‘tacky’ one year, and my dds defended it vigorously, so I’ve obviously taught them well Grin

Love tinsel on photo frames and twisted up the bannister, but I don't like it on the tree. I prefer lametta and lots of it Grin

Anyone recall Harry Enfield's antiques shop?
Yes!
It was called "Saw You Coming"!

Youseethethingis · 13/11/2021 21:31

I love tinsel, on the tree, twisted around the bannister, draping from the ceiling 80's style, framing pictures and door frames... Some of the tinsel is just about as old as I am and looking very tatty these days but I'm quite attached.
I like Christmas decorations to be a bit of a rammy in this house - "tasteful" is for the uptight and commercial settings such as hotels etc IMO.

"brushing furtively agaisnt the top few rungs" Grin

Hilarious.
I too adore it. The smell, the rustle, the twinkles and I love this new stuff that looks like a rainbow of quality street wrappers.
My tree is nutcracker at roh themed and this tinsel is my "land of the sweets" weaving through my tree story. Grin

Look tinsel is fine, it's not tacky.

foxgoosefinch · 14/11/2021 01:22

After a couple of decades of Taste, and white lights with exquisitely chosen rustic and white decorations, last year DD begged for colour, and convinced me to get multicoloured lights, rainbow tinsel and shedloads of kitsch. It looked frigging amazing and I’m looking forward to doing it again this year.

Melroses · 14/11/2021 01:33

I like a good Tinsel Angel Grin

Snugglepumpkin · 14/11/2021 01:42

My tree looks naked without big fat swags of tinsel all around it.

I also have coloured lights & I don't care how tacky people think it is or unfashionable.

My tree is green, my tinsel is gold, my lights are multicoloured & my baubles/decs are numerous.

My absolute favourite bit of every December evening is when it gets dark enough that the tree casts a Christmassy light over the room & I just have big fat (fake on a timer) wax flickering candles & the firelight to see by.
It feels magical to me.

Wouldn't be the same without the tinsel.

StrawberryDumpling · 14/11/2021 01:58

I hate tinsel with a passion! It's not allowed within an inch of my tree, however my dc love it so they have it on the small tree they have in their room, which we also buy a new bauble for every year.

On a sidenote, I'm itching to put mine up has anyone done theirs yet?

Ours is going up today Grin

BatshitCrazyWoman · 14/11/2021 12:19

I love tinsel! I also had lametta previously, my late DCat wasn't interested in it. New-to- me DCat might be a different matter - it is dangerous if cats eat it.

I don't have a themed tree, they seem a bit soul less to me.

Helenahandkart · 14/11/2021 12:26

I love the smell of tinsel too. Whenever I’ve mentioned it, people look at me like I’m insane and tell me it doesn’t smell of anything.

LittleDandelionClock · 14/11/2021 13:27

Tinsel is AWESOME, and not in any way tacky! And the smell is lush. Your friends are snobs!

itsallgoingpearshaped · 14/11/2021 13:30

Tinsel is really bad for the environment.
It clogs vacuum cleaners.
It can injure/kill cats if they eat it ... it just keeps going in and causes issues.
Plus, yes, tacky.

PonderingTotskeit · 14/11/2021 13:32

I love tinsel. I’m sure Greg Wallace did an inside the tinsel factory.

TheseBootsWereMadeForSitting · 14/11/2021 13:35

Yes, the smell.

What is it?

Is it the plastics involved or are we, who like the smell, a bunch of latent glue sniffers.

1forAll74 · 14/11/2021 13:48

I have used tinsel since the 1940era and thereafter, not masses of it, but just round the fireplace, or hearth etc. In the early days, it brightened up the somewhat darker rooms in houses then. And old style tinsel, was quite thin strips, and not very long pieces of it., and not like the big bushy big lengths of tinsel these days. Its still cheery to see it though, when its gloomy and cold outside.

How is something that goes in & out of my lift bad for the environment?

I presume you don't buy cards, gift wrap, presents, non local food, walk everywhere & never fly?

'Clogs vacuum cleaners' WTF are you doing? Hoovering up entire 6ft strands?

Well lots of things are dangerous for cats to eat... but generally I don't have them breaking in to eat tinsel.

Tacky. Nope. Just not pretentious.

Bet you're a real delight at Christmas

Hairwizard · 14/11/2021 13:52

I splurged this year on a pile of tinsel from home bargains and the range. Bought the big fat rainbow tinsel for the main tree. Fuck it if it doesnt match. The dc will love it! This will be first year ive gone with tinsel. The more colours the better!

Augusta1 · 14/11/2021 13:56

I can’t abide “tack” in any shape or form until Christmas, when I embrace it wholeheartedly. Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without a bit of tinsel. I’ve got some lovely, thick, dark green and gold strands which we drape here and there. It is rather special in my eyes.

Our tinsel is about 25 years old and will probably still be going after I've left this mortal plane. I'm not in the habit, nor is dh, of vacuuming the tinsel up, it's generally draped everywhere or on the tree. We don't have cats...next. Tacky? Of course it's tacky, that's the whole pint of the delightful twinkly, shiny shit. Some of us love tacky Christmas trees that remind us of our childhoods, plus the smell, that delicious smell of Christmas when you open the decoration box, pull out your bags of it easel still in Woolies plastic bags, open the tinsel bag Grin
FourTeaFallOut · 14/11/2021 14:01

Yes, it's tacky. That's why it's wonderful. A tasteful Christmas is a poor substitute.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 14/11/2021 14:02

Red and gold foil garlands? Check.
Red and gold tinsel? Check
Baubles? Check.
Star on the top? Check.
Multi-coloured lights? Kindof, it's a fibre-optic tree

Tacky? Who cares. Our tree is an homage to the decorations section at Wilko. Grin
