Presents for an almost 4 y/o who doesn't like toys!!

My wonderful DS2 will be four in late Jan. He is a great kid but he doesn't really play with toys in the traditional sense. His brother likes Lego/duplo/cars so much easier!

What does he like? He likes role play, his favourite game is running around the house pretending to be Bluey/Pikachu/a dinosaur.

He absolutely loves making dens and hiding in dark places with a torch. We often find him in cupboards 🤣. This is along with pretending to be on adventures, his second fave thing to do.

He likes bags and things he can put things into. He runs around with a rucksack and puts toys into the rucksack, but he doesn't play with them for long. Little pots and boxes are always a hit.

He does quite like little dinosaur toys/figures but he has lots of these.

We have a toy kitchen which he enjoys and all the paraphernalia.

He loves to climb, swing & play outside. If he's not running around the house on some adventure, he's outside making potions or having an adventure on the climbing frame.

All the toys I see - paw patrol cars, marble runs, Lego, he'd like them a bit, but they don't tap into his real interests.

So I need out there presents, for a role play, den loving, active little pre schooler!

Hit me with your ideas!

My DS is very similar! He's 12 now, but has had the following over the years:

  • a survival rucksack with 'tarpaulin' to make a shelter, camo face paints, torch, compass
  • binoculars
  • walkie talkies
  • spy kit
  • microscope and slides with bugs etc to examine
  • cheapie go pro camera to fix on his bike or helmet (more recently)
  • fossil dig kit

He still uses most of these!

Tigersteakpie · 13/11/2021 10:56

He is fantastic and we adore his funny little character. He goes to pre school now and is as good as gold, so I'm hoping he'll be fine at school. He will sit and do things and play with toys with his peers. It's just not something he's interested in at home when he's pottering around himself. And of course if I get involved I get it all wrong 🙈. He actively avoids things like jigsaws and games like orchard toys though.

Some fab ideas though. He'd love the den making kit, but only for the bag 🤣. He would like a camera though!

Not cheap - but how about a gorilla gym?

Learning resources do quite a good cash register/till. I have bought it for my son along with pretend money, purse/wallet, pretend credit cards. Perfect for playing shops 😃

Sounds very much like my 7 year old. Binoculars were a present he bought himself 3 years ago and still get used weekly.

My DS is also a huge fan of guns, nerf guns and plastic knives. He s had various police/army sets over the years and the guns and knives are the things still played with and in his bag for a "mission".

DS has a hiking rucksack, a sports bag and an eastpac small messenger bag which get used for different games.

He also LOVES the "hunting/fishing" jackets I got him which are basically mesh body warmers with loads of pockets.

Another current hit is anything camouflage: Mand S have a huge range of clothes: pants, socks, joggers, tshirts, hoodies...

A fleecy blanket is often used in games too. And oddly enough, a bandana Grin

For Christmas DS is getting a survival guide for children and a pocket microscope.

I want to get him a spy set but the reviews have always been crap

InvincibleInvisibility · 13/11/2021 12:04

Hes also getting a detective set

My children are all quite similar.
They currently have a game going on with chairs on their sides and blankets! Mini skateboards, anything ride on, roller skates are all huge hits.

TellMeSomeGoodNewsPlease · 13/11/2021 15:12

Binoculars
Mini microscope
Bug catcher
Camera
Walkie talkies so you can chat to him from the kitchen while he goes on adventures! We got some Motorola T42 rather than cheapo kiddie ones and they are easy enough for kids to use. They are also really handy for camping etc!
Small pop up tent
Spy pen
Utility belt

FixItUpChappie · 13/11/2021 15:31

My eldest is similar in his interests......we did a costume box one Christmas which was a big hit.

Also these are wonderful I bought my kids two boxes:

I found the crazy fort one of the biggest disappointments ever. Very difficult to build anything. DS was gutted

JassyRadlett · 13/11/2021 15:54

When DS2 was this age, we got him a safari-style jacket with lots and lots of pockets and sewed on some cloth badges with fossils/etc. Combined it with a brown explorer style hat (like Andy wears on dinosaur/safari adventures) and it was his explorer outfit. He loves storytelling and role play and the pockets brought him huge joy.

Gardening tools as well perhaps?

There is a den making kit that you make different shaped dens with sticks and joiners

Walky talkies

Bug collection kit.

Shadow kit.

Dancingsmile · 13/11/2021 16:01

A box that locks with a key.

BeaLola · 13/11/2021 16:08

If you have the space I'd buy a proper tent for the garden

Underthestairsbears · 13/11/2021 16:09

Mud kitchen for the garden
Den making kit
Dressing up box with lots of versatile items that can be used for various characters - hats, scarves, capes, shoes, fur etc
Easel with art supplies

goose1964 · 13/11/2021 17:47

Dressing up costume plus accessories so pirate suit ,sword, eyepatch, treasure chest , gold coins.

Hetyanni · 13/11/2021 17:51

You can get bug hunting kits which come with binoculars and other bits like a compass and magnifying glass and a little rucksack to put the all in. Amazon do them. Was also going to suggest dressing up costumes and accessories

BlueBobs · 13/11/2021 18:22

We've bought this for our DS for den building, got lots of sheets and blankets around the house we can use

2lostsouls · 13/11/2021 18:42

Sounds much like my DS at a similar age (and still, at 11). Lots of “proper” toys that were wanted but ignored fairly quickly. Not a gift, but he’d probably enjoy geocaching. I bought my DS a load of stuff to make bath potions with - cheap shaving foam, plastic test tubes, food colouring etc that occupied him for ages. Other things that he loves/loved have been slime or putty; a plastic terrarium thing that you can keep snails etc in for a couple of days; Gotrovo (treasure hunt thing you can set up around the house for him).

Bluetrews25 · 13/11/2021 19:07

He sounds adorable, OP!
Treasure chest?

supremelybaffled · 13/11/2021 19:11

A camouflage net?
