Got one for my 9yo this year. The only console we've ever had as a family is an ancient Wii but she's played with a friend's Switch and wants one. At the moment I just have the console itself. Anything else I need to enchance the experience? And would you go for digital or physical games?

Shamelessly following as we are in the same situation.

I would get one of these for playing on the tv. Physical games are easier because they dont take up much space on the storage. Otherwise worth getting an SD card to bump the storage up

I prefer physical to digital copies (sell on when completed)
I would also invest in a pro controller

Pro controller

I’d get a second set of controllers (or maybe the controller linked to above works in the same way).

I’ve bought physical games but at one point Nintendo had a sale and I bought a few games virtually at 75% off.

It’s been really popular here…

We got ds one last year. Buy a travel case and accessories pack (we got one on Amazon Black Friday sale) with screen protector, stylus and controller you slide the switch's joycon things into (so technical me like).

We got a Nintendo switch branded headset for about £15 in Asda

We buy physical and digital games but not many as he enjoys the games on game pass

Some physical copy games are actually just the boxes with a download code in (we thought games were missing at first)

I would say definitely

  • travel case (Argos sometimes have offers)
  • screen protector (I bought a good one will find the link for you)

We got an additional wired controller which I use. It was a themed one and only £20. You can get an extra set of joy cons but they are £60+ and not essential.

Nintendo online membership if she wants to play with her friends online.

An sd card isn't essential to begin with but you will want to download demos, updates, Tetris and old retro games are free with an online membership.

Deal: PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller for Nintendo Switch - Mario, Nintendo Switch Lite, Gamepad, game controller, wired controller, officially licensed https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07W72RVK5/ref=cmswwrcppapiglttfabcdllWJ5K1632E7HCT30C4YAH

We have this one, there are various versions so pick one that tied into a game she likes.

They are properly licensed/not fake and fine for a parent to play along.

Ooh thanks. Lots of things to look at then. Never heard of game pass and didn't realise you had to have online membership to play with friends. This will be the gift that keeps on giving my money away Grin

Ooh. Good thread. Ds has asked for one this year. We know nothing about any of the game consoles on offer these days. When we were kids it was the commodore 64!! Slow as fuck cassette that you had to wait to load. Fun times!

mummyof2boys30 · 09/11/2021 22:35

Extra pair controllers
Screen protector
Memory card
Family membership
Docking charging station
Carry case
The thing that makes joycon into normal controller

Yip we too have went down this route and costing a fortune lol
