My 2.4 year old granddaughter loves pirates and the idea of treasure and had great fun hiding and finding real coins earlier today but my heart was in my mouth at the thought of her swallowing one whilst in my care, well at any time obviously.
Can anyone give me any ideas of plastic coins that are large enough not to be swallowed but small enough to look like treasure please for her for Christmas , happy to buy her a treasure chest and coins as a set.
I know there are chocolate ones available but I wanted a toy rather than a one off treat.

Learning Resources have a couple of toys she might like, one is a treasure sorting game, the treasure doesn't look sparky and exciting but it is treasure chest themed and educational. There is also a pretend geo cracking game that looks good fun, with gems inside.

Also Battat have a pirate themed diving toy set, meant to be used in a swimming pool but might fit the bill as a toddler toy, it could be played with in the bath too maybe.

These ones look good too, there are a lot of large acrylic gems marketed as dive toys that could work, and you could buy a wooden decorate your own type chest from the Works or similar for less than the Battat one. Check sizes though as they seem to vary a lot, some are quite small.

We have these. The coins are pretty big but the jewels you’d have to be careful with. They have been SO loved by my 3 DC though. My youngest is 3 and her favourite game is when I hide them in her little sandpit and she has to dig with her spade for them and put them in her treasure chest (which her big brother made for her out of an egg box 😂) We also have multi-coloured bead necklaces that she digs for too. Maybe a bit more of a summer game though!

Just to add though, they don’t come nicely packaged. If I remember rightly they were just a plastic bag. But if you’re planning to give in combo with a chest, you could pop them inside. They just don’t look very ‘present-y’ on its own!

I was going to say sink toys too. Melissa and Doug sell a pirate set

Would these be too small?

What about the christmas chocolate coins you can get? You can get silver (white chocolate) and gold (milk chocolate) ones.

Oops sorry just re read you didn't want a one off thing.

At that age I'd probably make some from metallic fabric, lightly stuffed.

We made loads from card covered in foil, but the kids were older, they must have been 5 or 6 as they helped.

check out poker chips. they might be a good size and weight. toddlers however have a fairly big mouth so to be totally safe you'd need a bread and butter plate sized "coin".

My ds asked Santa for treasure so DH sprayed a lot of copper coins gold and sealed them (to make them safe for handling). I bought strings of fake pearls in charity shops and big chunky plastic scatter jewels from a wedding range in card shop.

I know she's too young for that but it was because we couldn't find suitable fake ones for our ds. He had some fake coins a s treasure free from CBeebies pirates magazine before that

If you want to include a treasure hunt aspect, check out a game called Gotrovo. My kids loved it.

The melissa and Doug pirate chest is great. Big coins and a secret compartment in the chest.

Thank you all for these great ideas, lots to check out
