If you can afford it, a bird box and wireless camera for it.

A good pair of binoculars. And a bird whistle for his stocking!

DD has several lovely bird books and she is fascinated. Also loves her own binoculars.

Another vote for a bird box and camera combo.

We have recently bought a wildlife camera which we set up on our bird feeder or table.

Also the RSPB shop sell some nice bits, I have bought dd1 the RSPB ‘guess who’, they have some good books too.

Different types of food and feeders attract different birds so worth getting some different types if you don't already, like a nyjer seed feeder and a bird peanut butter jar feeder. RSPB shop do bird food and feeder hampers which make good gifts. Me and my kids are getting a huge amount of enjoyment out of a squirrel feeder too, a squirrel arrived the day we put it up and they're really cute to watch. Putting nest boxes up in winter so they're ready for spring is a good idea and you can buy build and paint your own kits which my 9 year old loved last year.

Good binoculars.

The Bird Bingo game from Waterstones is really lovely.

Bit different but on the bargain thread there is chat about owl pellets that you can disect to see all the little bones of what they have eaten. Think they were about £3.

I was going to say bird box and camera. Wireless. Brilliant.

Or would he like a bird watching trip? Depending where you live, winter is an amazing time to see birds. A starling murmuration on the Somerset levels or waders on the Wash are major wildlife attractions. Even better with new binoculars! Lots of similar places round the UK.
