So DD is in year 3 and has a male teacher for the first time. I’m totally stumped for an idea for him and hoping for some inspiration please

We get laid speak for yourself! Grinbut we also work longer hours than we get paid for, get shouted at, sworn at, spat at, and on occasion physically assaulted. We don't get paid for that. We spent lockdown with everyone telling us we're heroes when they tried to educate their own children and now we're back to teacher bashing.

A token of appreciation goes further than you think, it's more than 'nice'

@BabyRace

I'm a teacher too so no teacher bashing intended. Yes it's a tough job at times for sure, as are many other jobs.
I just believe that a thoughtful comment can mean as much if not more than chocolates or wine.
I suppose my view is coloured by the fact that the parent's in our school struggle financially so I'd rather they spent that money on their own family. I might feel differently if I taught in a better off area?
My ds' class teacher gets a £150 voucher from the parents every summer and every Christmas Shock

As a parent of a teacher I would say no to chocolate or wine. They get a lot of it and not all of them drink. Starbucks or Costa vouchers might be a better idea or, as also mentioned book/Waterstones vouchers or even Amazon vouchers since they can buy anything but a card with a nice note from a pupil is always really appreciated just as much, if not more than spending money in an actual gift

Absolutely, that's why I put card and email to the head at the top of the list. I treasure letters from students written on paper torn out of their school books. It doesn't have to cost anything. I wouldn't mind a £150 voucher though!

Let her buy him a small toy motorbike! It will be memorable! Grin

One of those little port tasting sets, think I saw one on offer for £6 in Sainsbury’s today, three miniature bottles of port in a festive box.

Teacher here. I always love a mug or travel cup. My male colleague has a funky looking star wars travel cup from one of his pupils and he loves it.

I love stuff I can use in class that means I don’t have to buy it myself, such as a prop for a story (like a key character from a story book). The kids love it and it makes the reading area so much more engaging.

I always do a box of biscuits or chocolates for teacher and TAs. As a teacher, I appreciate the same (or wine!!)

BeaLola · 10/11/2021 23:32

When my son is as at Primary he had 2 male teachers - I liked classical music so we bought the Classic FM hardbacked book and the other was really into organising sports and doors after school football etc so we got a proper whistle and had it engraved - he loved it

Ex teacher here says best present has always been the coffee voucher. Wine and chocolates / biscuits also appreciated - they'll get eaten in the depressing bit of January for sure.

Flowers are a nice thought but no good if the teacher is going away on holiday. Please no "best teacher" ornaments / snow globes / pictures.

A mug is a possibility because it can go in the staff room and they do get broken regularly.

Child-made cards are always welcome.

Please don't send in home-baking (especially if made by children). I'm sorry but we wouldn't eat it unless we knew you and your standards of hygiene very well.

Any present is a nice thought of course, but if you want it to be really appreciated, stick to consumables.

So my sister is a teacher as are three good friends. They all said a nice card or picture from the child is appreciated most. My friends all said further than that go for a bottle of wine (assuming they aren’t teetotal obvs), and my sister said school supplies! Book vouchers or glue/colouring pencils/normal pencils/erasers etc.

farnworth · 11/11/2021 07:23

If you see this whilst offer is still on, the 850g bar of dairy milk, currently reduced to £5.90. Chocolate but funny. Your child should enjoy handing it over!!
Offer

If you want to spend more, then maybe wine
And definitely handwritten card and message to head.
Lovely idea

MissyB1 · 11/11/2021 08:06

I work in a school, I never expect any presents, but things I appreciate are;

Little Mini bottles Prosecco
Nero or Costa voucher
Chutneys or Jams
Book voucher
Box of nice biscuits

IHateCoronavirus · 11/11/2021 10:18

Alcohol is tricky IMO so many people don’t drink it for whatever reason. At our school lots of bottles get passed on or popped in the Tombola pile. Since working in schools it is the one present I no longer give.

My DD's teacher's favourite animal is a Sloth so I've got her a Sloth bento box!
