Christmas themed bedrooms for adult children

I know it might seem mad but I don't see my children all together very often. Suddenly had the idea to theme their bedrooms for Christmas. Dd2 (she'll be 26 by then) and bf is obvious - Nutcracker. We've been as a Christmas treat many times. I need three more ideas - maybe Winter Wonderland? Ice Hotel? Scandi? Any other suggestions please? DD1 (28) and bf are very eco, ds (25) and gf then dd3 17 who is at home anyway so it won't be a surprise.

Thanks!

Gonks or polar bears

WaltzingToWalsingham · 03/11/2021 17:59

It's a nice idea, but if your children are very eco, they might prefer that you didn't use any more of the earth's resources theming their bedrooms! Are you able to style them using things you already have around the house, perhaps?

MintyCedric · 03/11/2021 18:01

Sounds like Scandi/minimalist would be the best for DD1 and her partner...how far are you thinking of going though? Will they appreciate decorations etc if they're very eco conscious?

Winter Wonderland sounds great for your youngest DD and Ice hotel for your son.

Have you looked at things like backdrops etc or stuff on party websites...might give you some ideas.

Light in the Box do huge wall hanging from about £10. Reviews on Trustpilot a bit hit and miss but mostly positive.

I've not used them myself but am tempted...Good for ideas if nothing else.

How about a gingerbread house theme...maybe for the eco pair...you could do it with recycled brown paper and recycle it again afterwards?

Going off on a bit of a tangent here, but thinking of Christmas/winter-related themes:
Home Alone - complete with booby traps! Grin
Penguins
Selection box - could do a chocolate wrapper message board

I would probably think my mum had gone bonkers if she did something like this, although even at age 40 I would love it!

My mum would be horrified but it's the sort of thing I'll probably be doing for my DD when she's 40! She's currently 17 and didn't even want a tree up in her room last year Sad.

Home Alone is a fab idea!

Mumwithbaggage · 03/11/2021 19:31

It'll all be homemade, non plastic and tasteful btw. I have a loft full of fabrics, slices of wood, nutcracker stuff that comes out year after year plus my 1965 sledge, stuff from living in Sweden. Won't require much of an outlay or landfill stuff. Yes my children think I'm bonkers. As does my husband.

Well in that case you absolutely must do it and prove them right Grin.

Kyliealwayshadthebestdisco · 04/11/2021 02:02

Lol it sounds mad but I love it! I am especially loving the Home Alone theme with booby traps!

Have a look for festive bedding.
Lidl did a brushed cotton duvet and pillow set in Scandi style cream and red a couple of years ago - very reasonable.
My neighbours bought it and put it on for their early 30s DD and SIL's Christmas visit, and various neighbours contributed random reindeers to add to the ambience. The DD and SIL loved it and have asked what this year's theme will be!

As someone eco conscious I would not appreciate anything that created extra waste (including things that can be recycled - you’re still creating unnecessary waste and using finite resources). However, before you think I’m a complete grinch, could you do a sort of Narnia theme with plenty of greenery from the garden etc? I decorate our house mainly with lots of evergreens and lights (not completely eco but they are LED!) and we get lots of oohs and aahs from visitors.

IntemperateSpirits · 05/11/2021 09:19

If you already have the material - make some stockings, or mini stockings as bunting, ordinary bunting with christmas material; cushion covers; christmas gnomes or gonks.

You can willow weave all sorts - reindeer and wreaths, and that will all keep for next year as well.

Tell them you’ve no room for them but there’s a half decent inn nearby.
If the inn is full to try the farm.

JumperandJacket · 05/11/2021 10:10

Could you stick to a musical theme and have rooms based around carols- 12 Days of Christmas etc (might be a bit crowded!). The Holly and the Ivy for your eco-conscious DD with lots of greenery from the garden.

Dillidilly · 05/11/2021 11:55

I love this so much!! Some of the themes sound magical, especially the Narnia idea.

I do a much simpler version. White bedding, but a Christmas throw. We have a little twiggy Christmas tree I sometimes put in the spare room. A brilliant 'Ho cubed' cushion for engineer son.

Always, always a stocking for whichever adult children are at home for Christmas.

You have inspired me to do a bit more this year, using things we already have, so thank you so much for this thread!
