Hi all. I am looking for some ideas please. My work are involved with a charity at Christmas where we buy a gift for a child in the local area where the family is struggling. I have been given a 3 yr old boy. Budget is £25. I want to be able to get as much as possible for him for the money. Has anyone spotted any suitable bargains? Thank you in advance. X

You could get a good wooden train set for that price.

toolazytothinkofausername · 01/11/2021 13:27

Please do not buy a toy that requires batteries. I came from a low income family, relatives would think they were generous by buying fancy toys that required batteries, when in reality once the batteries ran out my parents couldn't afford to replace the batteries and I couldn't play with them anymore.

Perhaps a wooden train set?

Pumpkinsonparade · 01/11/2021 13:28

A scooter!!
Ds used his Thomas one for 4 years!! About 20 quid..

HappyPumpkin81 · 01/11/2021 13:32

Toy kitchen and play food.

BadgertheBodger · 01/11/2021 13:32

Aldi had a really nice wooden fire station in today which DS would have loved last year, also a train set

853ax · 01/11/2021 13:34

Duplo
PlayDoh set

RestingPandaFace · 01/11/2021 13:36

I would go for things that can be used in different ways or for imaginary play.
Duplo or mega blocks
Wooden trains (Lidl and Tesco do some that fit with each other and the Brio ones)
Pots and pans and play food
Dressing up costumes and accessories

I'd second the scooter. You can get some for that age group that are easier to steer (google Halfords evo mini kids scooter for an example at that price). Round here the children all love scootering, and it's a nice way for them to get out for some free fun in the local park.

cavalierkingc · 01/11/2021 13:37

argos have some good toys for this age on offer 2 for £15

Lollypop701 · 01/11/2021 13:38

Scooter is a great idea. Maybe look at nearly new if duplo as it’s expensive. My son never used train stuff, he loved dinosaurs and there’s good play sets fir this

HomeSliceKnowsBest · 01/11/2021 14:17

Argos have massive Hot Wheels sets 1/2 price (£30) if you can stretch? They require batteries though.

Bollindger · 01/11/2021 14:30

Buy him a starter bile or scooter.
His family will do the little things, it's things that cost more they can't do.

Newchallenge · 01/11/2021 14:31

Lego or Duplo?

Malibuismysecrethome · 01/11/2021 14:33

Yes please don’t buy him lots of cheap things. Get him one or two good presents that his parents couldn’t afford.

mam0918 · 01/11/2021 14:35

My 3 year old just had his birthday a loves his magnadoodle.

Theres a 'baby shark' one for sale at JDWillians ones only £5.99.

Pop up tents are cheap, impressively big and can be folded away if needed (at 3 my favorite gift was a wendy house, I loved prending I had my own house).

Teddies are always a good option and cheap.

MMAMPWGHAP · 01/11/2021 14:35

If there’s a good chance that the boy lives in a small flat, bedsit etc then is a scooter such a good idea? Also a ‘massive’ anything is not so great either.

mam0918 · 01/11/2021 14:38

Also my kids never played lego or on scooters/bikes - waste of money for us.

They had them but just weren't interested to the point my teen still cant ride a bike (by choice of refusing to learn).

DGFB · 01/11/2021 14:39

A collection of Hot Wheels cars would have been loved by both my boys aged 3. Also bits for the wooden train set, some pictures books or a marble run

Roystonv · 01/11/2021 14:39

I agree one main present but maybe some small things just for him, goodness knows what he might have to share. So toothbrush, flannel, shower gel, bath toy type of things. A book, jigsaw, gloves. Look in Aldi, market stall even a charity shop for unused.

Atalune · 01/11/2021 14:41

Cars and car garage?
New pjs

If you go to a large tescos and explain the situation the might also give you a bit of discount!

LayTheTableMabel · 01/11/2021 15:26

I second Aldi. The wooden toys are really good.... train set under £20, wooden crane £8ish, my 3yo loves his wooden birthday cake £7. Its a lovely thing to do btw. Wish more work places did this instead of £5/£10 secret Santa's.....

Theremustbemoretome · 01/11/2021 16:16

When my DS(6) was that age he enjoyed:

Duplo/Lego
Hot Wheels cars
Construction vehicles
Play-Doh
Dinosaur figures and farm animal sets
Drawing and colouring stuff
Football / any big ball

I personally wouldn’t buy a scooter unless you can also stretch to buy a helmet as you don’t know if the family would feel comfortable using a scooter without one.

To echo pp please don’t buy anything that needs batteries or a power supply.

mayblossominapril · 01/11/2021 16:24

Nice usborne sticker books were loved by my DS at 3. They are good enough quality to be restuck a few times.

Number109 · 01/11/2021 17:48

My 3 year old loves kinetic sand, for that budget I would think you could get a set that comes in its own box, and there’s a construction set with a crane and demolition ball.

Thank you for all of the ideas! X
