Presents for 9yo boy with asd that only likes gaming

Finding it really hard, he had asd but is into age appropriate stuff. He used to like playing with toys and figures but as he has got older he has become more fixated on gaming. I think he lacks some of the imagination to play with toys even though he always used to. He struggles with motor skills and also has adhd so anything that takes too much planning or concentration is out.
He can’t build lego, although has lots of HP sets. Doesn’t really like board games. Hates all kinds of craft or drawing.
He has bike, scooter ect.

Does anyone have any ideas? So far he’s only asked for switch games, Robux and a laptop which I’m not getting as he doesn’t need one (doesn’t do any school work at home)

Gaming desk or chair? Led lights for bedroom. New headphones for gaming?

BlusteryLake · 31/10/2021 16:44

You could get him the new Pokemon game for Switch, or a gaming keyboard. Also Roblox annual, the gaming version of the Guiness Book or Records, pjs with gaming pictures on them (John Lewis have some).

Cafog · 31/10/2021 16:44

Gaming hoodie or tshirt. Framed posters for bedroom wall? Small TV for playing switch on TV mode. New joy cons. Bag that holds switch plus games . Switch Pro controller. Nintendo online subscription. Headphones.

My 9 yo with Asperger's sounds very similar. We have gone with gaming themed stuff, so a nice gaming chair and also a big fluffy beanbag as he has sensory needs. One of those oodie hoodies. Some cool lighting for his room. A new wireless controller that lets him plug his headset in to it. A super fast charger plug and cable for the iPad (because he's so impatient!) coco pops. Nintendo gift vouchers for the eshop.

Logiblocs? Hot wires type set?

CherryBlossomAutumn · 31/10/2021 16:53

Will he let you know what he wants? Or through his parents? Failing that, as others have said, or vouchers for Nintendo etc.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 31/10/2021 16:55

Does he have Nintendo Labo? Gaming related so may be appealing. DS enjoyed making them and playing them.

girlmom21 · 31/10/2021 17:00

Google 'gaming locker'

DriftingBlue · 31/10/2021 17:01

We had the same dilemma at that age.

Had the further addition that would not wear clothing with logos or words.

Many popular games with that age group have room decor, especially light up room decor. It tends to be soft lighting which is really appealing.

Pencil cases, etc related to games they like.

Moon Pod bean bag chair or other comfy chair.

How about those computers you build? I have 2 Ds. Older one is a big collector and always wants the items he collects or money to buy those items. The other one is happy with money as the things he wants her usually pools his birthday money to buy (this year a new monitor which supports fast gaming and headphones) but I usually get some small bits like shower gel, chocolate etc.

CoolShoeshine · 31/10/2021 22:08

They had some nice Roblox figurine sets in Tesco - would be like them to display in his room even if he isn’t into playing with them? Also a poster for his room? Tickets to a gaming convention?

FancyNan · 01/11/2021 04:36

How about this book a history of video ggaming

WholeClassKeptIn · 01/11/2021 04:46

Any sensory toys? My child is older but still loves all the sensory items. Also weighted blanket, heavy toy etc.

Any electronics/crafts/lego kits he might build as something different?

Does he have any other special interests or hobbies/sports you could include.

Books?? Novels but also gaming type annuals/hints and tips type things.

Blankrt thats gaming themed. Or a hoodie gaming themed to a game he likes? Theres tons of mjnecraft merchandise for example.

If you google some of the games there are related merhandise that might be fun.

Favourite chocolate/dried fruit/sweets. One of my children had their own nlock of cheese one christmas! Made her happy...

Morph2lcfc · 01/11/2021 06:20

There are some Mario lego sets you can get now, would he like something like that?

WhatHaveIFound · 01/11/2021 08:44

My DS is getting gaming glasses. They have speakers built in so he doesn't have to wear a headset.

CactusLemonSpice · 01/11/2021 13:47

Thank you for some good ideas.
The logiblocks I have on my list, a gaming chair would be good or a bean bag or something as he has a cabin bed that he likes to sit under.
I’ll also look at strip lights.

He tends to play roblox on the iPad over the switch these days so I’m reluctant to buy too much switch related stuff as he has a lot of games that he doesn’t play now, but he definitely wants tbe new Pokémon game and a Pokémon teddy.

@DriftingBlue my ds also does not like clothing with writing or pictures. It’s strange isn’t it, I’m still not sure why. Even when he was little he didn’t I think it might be because it attracts attention.

I would embrace the gaming theme in this situation. I have a 13yo DS with probable ASD and probably dyspraxia too, and I’ve got it wrong in the past. We have many Lego sets unopened, (easy) craft sets untouched etc. There are so many things.

Now I go with limited themes and lean towards the edible, drinkable and useful.

So what about gaming socks, pants, stationery etc?

WellTidy · 01/11/2021 18:39

Also - what about things for his bedroom? New duvet set, new desk and chair, framed prints/posters/canvases, lava lamp?

DriftingBlue · 01/11/2021 22:59

Thought of one toy.

Turing Tumble.

It’s basically a physical computer.

It can be a bit tricky to set up the easel, but after that the pieces are very easy to place even for kids with less than perfect fine motor skills. It comes with a set of puzzles to work through.

Grimbelina · 01/11/2021 23:06

One VERY similar here. All the LED gaming accessories: headphones, keyboards, lights (including the colour changing LED's with remotes for main lights) have gone down very well indeed. New requests are a green screen to go on the wall behind them.
