electric toothbrush

I know I know, boring subject sorry!

I'm wanting to buy DH an electric toothbrush for Xmas. He bought me an oral b one last year, I think it's the genius x, it has Bluetooth and can connect to an app on phone to view where needs improved brushing. To be honest, I'm not arsed about connecting my phone to my toothbrush, I also don't think DH will be that bothered about that feature either.

What I'm wanting to know is are the oral b brushes the same speed/same power or are they all different depending on the model? For example on Boots, comparing the genius x and the smart 4500?

Thank you!

My dentist told me not to buy the all singing and dancing ones , just a basic or first couple of levels Oral B . She said the rest was just gimmicks

Nearlyadoctor · 13/11/2021 09:50

Ours are the 2900

takethattime · 13/11/2021 09:52

My dentist said the same. As long as it brushes, that’s all you need.

I got us new ones on Black Friday, Amazon last year. Plenty good deals about. I thin I paid about £60 each brush.

PinkDaydreams · 13/11/2021 09:53

That's exactly what I think about my Bluetooth one, it's a gimmick! I don't use the Bluetooth at all or the case that came with it.
What's the difference in power with them though? I can't work out power difference or if they are the same?

My dentist told me as long as it has the pressure sensor (not just a light coming on but changes speed I think). They don't all have that but I think the 1000 or 2000 plus do.

You don't want too much power anyway, it's not a food mixer! I guess longer battery life is better.
MerryMarigold · 13/11/2021 09:55

Boots are doing very good deals. I just bought 2 handles and one charger for 55.00. You can get a single handle she charger for 40.00.

Ilikewinter · 13/11/2021 09:55

Dont buy the cheapest one, the handle is horrible and bulky. Get a model thats full price around £60 but always reduced to around £30!.
The heads will fit all models so dont necessarily buy into 'gum clean' and 'whitening'.

PinkDaydreams · 13/11/2021 09:58

@MerryMarigold that's really made me laugh, it's not a food mixer Grin

Yes my one the battery life is rubbish!

I was thinking the 4500 which seems in the middle, not the basic but not top of the range (waste of gimmicks!)

I'm thinking of using my boots points as I've got loads but want to spend them on something useful.

Yeah I looked at that one. I think I got the 2500. It says 2 weeks battery life. I'm sharing with DD (different heads) and DS can have the other handle.

Ps. Make sure you get him something a little more romantic as well!

Honestly he's so difficult to buy for, he knows the majority of what he's got already as he asked for it all! Yes I've defo got him some more romantic presents as well Grin

You're doing well! I haven't got dh anything. And he is so hard to buy for because what he'd actually want is something which cost 5.00 but is worth 100.00.

dottiedodah · 13/11/2021 10:19

My Dentist told me an Electric TB is much better than a manual one . I have Oral B worth £70.00 paid about £40.00 I think . What is also important according to Dentist is flossing /interdental brushes as well .Still trying to get to grips with these though! There are several You Tube videos showing the best way to brush with an EB as well

beigebrownblue · 13/11/2021 10:19

Just watch whether it is rechargeable or not.

Sounds obvious but we don't have sockets in the bathroom so means leaving it in another room to charge.

Some bathrooms have shaver sockets.

Thank you! That's the same with us, but we have a plug socket outside the bathroom door

Genuine curiosity.... if you already have an electric toothbrush, why do you need to buy your husband another one? Do you always brush your teeth at the same time, or is there some other reason that I’m missing for not sharing? The toothbrush heads come with those little coloured rings precisely so you can tell them apart and switch around. Given that these will all eventually end up in landfill, and lifespan is dictated partly by age not just total number of times used, it seems more environmentally friendly to share one brush with separate heads. I’m a dentist, and ask this question partly because I’m amazed at how many people don’t share. I’ve always shared with my husband, and now we share with our son too, so this really is genuine curiosity as no one has ever been able to articulate exactly why they don’t share.

As for features, the ones that actually make a difference to how good the brush is are “3D action” (so oscillation as well as rotation, proven by unbiased research to be more effective), and pressure sensors. The 4000 or 4500 are excellent brushes and the Oral B Teen is basically identical but comes in funky patterns and is usually cheaper.

To be frank, I don’t want to share slavers or an unrinsed base unit with others. That is grim.
TheAnswerIsCake · 13/11/2021 20:23

Unwashed toothbrushes are totally grim even if you’re not sharing! You need to remove the head each time even if not sharing and wash the base and head thoroughly. Preferably leave the head in direct sunlight on a windowsill. But it’s not any more grim than using the same cutlery or mugs after they’ve been washed... Confused

PinkDaydreams · 14/11/2021 07:53

Thanks for the help everyone! In case anyone is interested, I went for the oral b 4500 from boots.
DH sometimes works away so we wouldn't be able to share a brush, also feel a bit ick sharing it, I know it's psychological as obviously I'd use different head but I don't know, just feel more comfortable with my own.
