Rooted Christmas trees. How do they work, then?

Do you plant them in your garden for 11 months of the year? Or do they live in a big pot? Do they keep their shape? What if a bird nests in them? Aren't they really heavy to lug in and out of the house?

Explain to me in words of one syllable of fewer.

Leave it in its pot, but in my experience they will die anyway, the longest we got one to survive was June, although my dads got a little one thats survived for several years now. They do survive better in the house over Christmas though and therefore drop less needles so worth getting for that reason really. If a bird nests in it it will be gone by Christmas!

They last longer. You need to water them and they live in a pot in your house over xmas. After that, they live in a pot outside until they die, 2 days after the recycling xmas tree facilities have closed and then they won't burn or decompose and will be a brown shrivelled summer garden feature until next year - unless you are my parents who have a 32 year old xmas tree planted in their garden.

The pots they come in are too small
They don't have enough compost in them
Water every day indoors
Once Christmas is over, repot in a bigger pot with more compost
Keep outside as an attractive feature plant
Bring indoors again next Christmas

So it's to make them last over Christmas. Oooh. I thought it was an environmenal thing so you just had one tree for years and years and didn't cut down and kill a tree every December.
