Very silly question coming up, but what is the done thing when it comes to giving christmas cards within schools?

My son started school this year and I was wondering whether everyone in his whole class should get a card or just the friends he names (as there are two classes in foundation stage.)

There are only 15 in DD's class so DD has sent a card to each girl in the class, as well as other friends. This is her choice. She is in Y1 this year so I was able to just leave her to it. Last year I wrote the names of the children on a peice of paper for her to copy.

If lots of children I'd just let him send cards to those children he chooses to do them for.

just give to a few friends or those that he mentions

dd did her cards on the weekend and did about a dozen or so? boys and girls

no need to to everyone, too tedious! we are encouraged not to by the school, becomes unmanagable

GooseyLoosey · 11/12/2007 11:53

Ds just started school this year and I was going to send one to them all (about 24). However, ds is adamant that there are some children he does not want to send a card to (very difficult for me as they happen to be children of mothers I know quite well) so I am going to let him choose who to send them to.

Ask the teacher

Its tradition to send to all at my boys infants (28 in a class), which is a drag but if you don't then you still gewt the cards so really you then have to return the favour...

DS1 in yr3 and have cut back to those he wanted to send to

hana · 11/12/2007 11:54

i wouldn't have a clue who dd gets cards from - parents won't be bothered I'm sure ifyour dd/ds doesn't get a card from them if you are friendly with them!

Martha200 · 11/12/2007 11:55

There are 30 in his class. He has named about half of the class.

I guess I was trying to imagine if there were mums out there who are very observant and will mentally note who gave their child or not a card and somehow hold this against them and I remember one girl when I was younger who received very few cards and on reflection it must have been completely horrid for her the whole school experience as she was always picked on for daft childish reasons.

DS1s class teacher sends out a class list of first names at xmas. we sent one to each and then one to any friends he had mentioned on more than one occasion from the other reception class(there are 2), we have written 50 cards this year BUT that is all our cards done [preen]

ds wanted to do cards lastnight,i was out with dd and dh was putting ds2 to bed, apparently he got fedup with ds1 asking so said do what you like(idiot)and so ds did!he sat down and wrote 6 cards to same friend.when i got home and asked why 6 cards to 1 person he said 'because i dont know how to spell anyone elses names!' awwww.so were sitting down together tonight to do them.

paulaplumpbottom · 11/12/2007 12:18

My dd gave one to everyone. That way nobody got left out

MamaG · 11/12/2007 12:19

I did everybody in DD's class.

ggirlsbells · 11/12/2007 12:20

I am ignoring the card giving subject with ds,he hasn't asked to do it yet but loves getting them.

BadKittenInAPearTree · 11/12/2007 12:51

dd writes cards to people she wants to in her class. If it gets close to the number of people or girls in the class then I ask her who she has left out and I ensure she includes them all. If she wants to just write a few I ask her who is likely to get the fewest cards in the class and make sure she writes one to them. Its probably a bit over engineered but I hope I'm teaching her to think about the less popular children too.

Julezboo · 11/12/2007 12:55

i did everyone in the class too, everyone seems to!

Alambil · 11/12/2007 12:56

DS will send one to everyone - OOO must get one ready for this afternoon pick up cos the kid is going on holiday ... will do it right now

There are only 15 in his class though.

You can get boxes of 30 cards in Wilkos for £1 or so!

scattysanta · 11/12/2007 12:59

We gave one to everyone. I'd hate to think of someone constantly being left out.

clumsymum · 11/12/2007 13:14

last year (Y2) ds did one to everyone in his class.

This year he's in a mixed Y3 and Y4 class, and I think he's giving cards to everyone who went up into the class with him, + particular friends who went into the other Y3 class.

But he's old enough to decide, and generally now does the spellings himself (altho'I did make him ditch one to his 'girlfriend' in which he had written "I think you are sexy" )

I don't think we did any in reception BTW.

ChasingSquirrelsUpTheXmasTree · 11/12/2007 13:19

21 in ds1's class, doing cards for all plus others in the next class up that he is specifying.
I have put names on the envelopes and he is filling the cards in.
Good writing practive for him, and I just got pack of small cards that were 99p for 30 so not expensive.
I wouldn't do for all of 3 foundation classes (presuming there are 60 of them?), I would ask him to specify.

dragonstitcher · 12/12/2007 11:12

25 in DD3s year 3 class. She gives everyone one. DDs 1 and 2 are in secondary school and only give to friends.
