Weighted blankets- what do I need to know

Thinking of getting them for my DD13 and DS10 because they like to cuddle up in a blanket

Is there a particular weight that I should avoid for their ages? Or are the weights more to do with the blankets size?

Any information, recommendations greatly appreciated

Why a weighted blanket rather than just a normal fluffy one? Weighted blankets aren’t really for sitting in on a sofa etc. It’s more to calm you in bed so you can sleep. Some people need the pressure to help them relax, especially if they aren’t NT.

They aren't washable!

I bought one for DD ( she's 19) last year to try and get her into a good sleep routine for going to University . She'd had the typical l-o-n-g summer after finishing 6th Form and the habits of sleeping late , going to bed late ..

Got one from QVC
It is handwashable (not that I'm ever going to it is bloody heavy !)
It fits across her double bed , no excess drape but surrounds her when she sleeps , she loves it especially when it gets colder .
It's not in the same league as a fluffy throw , I certainly wouldn't want to sleep under it , I'd feel suffocated . Ir is quite a heavy , allover pressure

There was a removable cover one either Amazon or Costco but I wasn't sure it would stay in place .

Oh and it was one colour - grey , which thankfully goes ok in her room

@Ostryga my daughter has some anxiety and I thought it might be calming for her. They both like fluffy blankets on the sofa- my son often cocoons himself so I thought he would like a weighted blanket due to the extra pressure.

@70isaLimitNotaTarget that's really helpful thank you!

@JuneOsborne that might the deciding factor 😆

Yes, they can be: Get one with a removable washable cover!

Don't get one without this as pp is correct, they get grim.

I think the weight is supposed to be 10% of individual's weight.

PS my DC liked having on sofa and on bed. it doesn't have to be either/or.

I have a Simba Orbit. It's very expensive but I chose it for the removable machine washable cover.

Without stating the obvious, they are very heavy. I love the blanket so much, but underestimated how heavy it would be to lift when I want to use it.

SarahBellam · 22/10/2021 14:40

I got one and I felt like I was being crushed (probably too heavy for me) but my DP used mine, woke up the next morning and went straight onto Amazon to order one for himself. It was transformative for him. It's almost like some sort of Harry Potter Cloak of Sleep. You can see his eyes drop as soon as his head hits the pillow and he's out for the count for a good 8 hours. He was always prone to eczema on his face, and body and that's just gone. His skin is glowing and he's so much happier. It really has destressed him. He's about 15 stone and has a 9 kilo blanket and I'd say that's about perfect. So roughly half a kilo per stone (sorry - am mixing my measurement!)

I had one and loved it but then the inner bit with the actual glass beads kept twisting inside the washable cover. So it ended up being a mangled heap and I couldn't lay it flat. I gave it away in the end.

NC145632 · 22/10/2021 14:44

make sure the washable cover connects to the blanket with little ties inside - that stops the blanket moving inside the cover. Adds bit of time to re-tie all the little ties when you wash it, but worth it.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 22/10/2021 14:48

Mine had the little ties and I did them all up but it still managed to get twisted up.

Kuddly ones wash really well. They are the business!

DramaAlpaca · 22/10/2021 20:21

As someone said above, the blanket should be no more than 10% of the weight of the person using it.

RAFHercules · 23/10/2021 00:23

My DD has one and loves it, it was about £100 and is very soft velvet, they aren't for everyone though, I've tried it and it makes me feel sick.

AnnieSnap · 23/10/2021 18:29

Different choice possibility - I’m easily cold and recently bought a heated throw. It is the loveliest, most relaxing thing, but not for hot weather of course. Despite being described as washable, it isn’t, but I still love.

We have the Kuddly ones too. We use them on the sofa in the winter then take them up to bed. They are about 5kg that should be fine for the 13 year old and probably the 10 year old depending on size.

I bought my kids a Mela weighted blanket each. I was swayed by the no noise glass beads and seal pup soft cover. They're pricey but worth it. My son lent me his whilst I recovered from a cold - was like I'd taken a sedative, so cosy.
