My grandmother is 101 and so this year we have bought her a tin of really special biscuits which can go on the tray she has by her chair. My mum reckoned that would be our best bet as she is fairly infirm and she would be able to enjoy them without any difficulty. In the past we have also had flowers delivered and bought her nice hand soap, but I agree it is very difficult. HTH

That was only 15 years ago

Our last present was some of those 'artificial but look good' sweet peas from Lakeland. She couldn't cope with real plants, we always used to get hyacinths but they were too much hassle, so the smelly artificial ones were perfect.

My DDs 89 year old granny requested a new crossword dictionary. She is also getting a calendar with pictures of dachshunds (gets one of those every year), DDs school photo and a frame DD made herself containing snap of DD and DH. She usually gets enough scotch from her neighbours (who probably drink it come to think )

If you've got scattered family, you perhaps just have time to ask each to send you some pics for you to compile a small album.

We have bought a Digital Frame for 80 year old Dad, and filled it with photos from his birth right through to his greatgrandaughter, photos of when we were little, his and Moms wedding, photos from when we lived abroad, and from when he was in the RAF.

It did take me hours to scan them onto the pc tho.

Talking books (NB if buying CDs check they have a CD player otherwise tapes). Always popular with my GPs.

We did Oxfam buy a goat thing last year for both our elderly Grans and they loved it (was actually buying school books for children, but you get the idea.)

When my granny was quite old and infirm, we got her a lap tray which was a big success, like this:

For my Great-Nana (92 on New Year's Eve), we have a small bottle of brandy, a framed school photo of DS, a new plump cushion and a fleecy throw. For her birthday she will have a photobook, a compilation of our year in pictures (the bulk of them being of DS).

I agree that a digital photo frame is a great pressie - just bought one for m-in-law and thinking of getting one for great gran.

Needs to be a decent size and you would need to have it all setup to run.

Some run on batteries if electrics are a problem. Some have remotes, which can be handy as they can be fiddly and fall off shelf when trying to press buttons on back. Also some play background music!
