How much do you spend on adults?

If you buy for the adults in your family/extended family. What's your budget per person? How many adults do you buy for?

Or do you have a rule of not buying for adults?

I'm just interested to know what other people do.

I love buying gifts... it's my thing

Me too. In those love languages tests mine always comes out as gift giving/receiving. I put a lot of time and effort into buying things I know people will love. This talk of not buying presents for adults or only buying 1 present in a secret santa makes me shudder Grin

Lockdownbear · 21/10/2021 19:45

I think the stuff that makes it hard is not knowing what to buy and being very aware of cupboard clutter.

didireallysaythat · 21/10/2021 22:27

I buy for DH and MIL & SM as they live alone, but that's it. I don't buy for my mother, brother, sister in law, brother in law etc etc.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 21/10/2021 22:29

Nope don’t buy for adults- never have even before I had kids and had niece and nephews- never bothered me.
My friend who is one of 4 and they are all married so a secret Santa with all the adults and spend £50- a good idea it a lot of you.

elQuintoConyo · 23/10/2021 14:39

I'll get a book for each parent, they're voracious readers. Around £20 for a hardback, or under.

I don't buy for DSis, we buy for each others kids, about £20 each (boardgame, Lego etc).

For DH about £80-100 (combination of uberfluffy dressing gown, new wallet, new pool stuff, chocolate).

Adult friends: a lot of us are crafters, so we'll make things for each other (scarf, gloves, tree decs, tote bags etc) which are my favourite things to open on Christmas day, to make and give.

That's it. Cheap and cheerful Christmas!

We used to do £30x 4 adults and £100 x6 adults. We’re now on 3rd year of secret Santa with one set this year and 2nd year with another so will do £30 exchange with one side and £70 with the other, £200 in total for DH and I to take part.
It’s amazing, not just the money but the massive reduction in stress/planning and the fact it’s completely secret means DH has to do his own planning/buying so only 2 gifts for me to think about.

Bigoldhag · 25/10/2021 08:09

I am buying for 11 adults, 10 children plus a couple of people I exhange handmade gifts.

Its mostly immediate family members in the adult section - as I have step parents/grandparents. I do however do secret santa for the siblings/inlaws which is a pool of 7 of us, so knocks it down quite a bit thankfully. I’m very lucky that its not so much about the financial impact but the mental labour that I try to reduce, - chosing quality over quantity.

It’s all adults in my family.
I spend about £180 each on my three DC and my DH and £45 ish on my DM. I don’t buy for anyone else.

DockOTheBay · 06/11/2021 16:56

We buy for our parents and my brother and SIL and spend about £25 each.
Husband's brothers have kids so we buy for them instead of the adults.

For grand parents and great grand parents we tend to get a token gift of around £10 such as a photo calendar, shortbread in a tin etc. We have 7 between us

DockOTheBay · 06/11/2021 16:57

Oh i also buy for DH obviously and spend about £40

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 06/11/2021 17:10

can you do Secret Santa?

XingMing · 06/11/2021 17:16

We have a Secret Santa draw with a ceiling price of about £50, so every adult gets one present and buys one. The children get presents from everyone, but there are only two at the moment. It's been working well for a few years. Couples buy for each other, plus there will be a gift from us for DC.

This was a good read. If your child is fascinated by the various kinds of vehicles then this art project is perfect for him.

We have always spent around £20 (7 adults). Last year because of furlough etc I suggested secret Santa and everyone agreed and the same this year with £20ish budget. I’d been reluctant to suggest before because we are the only ones with kids and they stilll buy for them, so we do get everyone something small.

vdbfamily · 06/11/2021 19:02

My side of family there are 10 adults and we do secret Santa with Max spend of£20.
13 kids in extended family so each couple buy for 2-3 kids and they get one family present budget£20/25.
Husband side of family have never done presents.

beccahamlet · 06/11/2021 19:09

We only buy for kids.

leafygarden42 · 07/11/2021 08:55

There's also an expectation of buying for adult nieces and nephews that don't so much as send us a Merry Christmas text.

That soooo much would not be happening here. Once the kids are over 18 - it's hard luck or possibly a small token gift like a little box of chocolates if you see them on Christmas Day.

Pheebs2021 · 07/11/2021 09:00

Siblings £15
Siblings partners £10

Mum £? She gets a spoil she's a legend so far I've spent £30 but it'll increase

Dad - approx £25. More if he 'needs' something and I might splash out.

Friends say £20 each and I have four friends I buy for.

DH is difficult to buy for so I normally end up spending quite a bit this year we're at £350 and likely to go up.

vdbfamily · 07/11/2021 12:51

We actually as started a new thing last year that my brother just reminded me of. Now of the 21 remaining family members on my side, the youngest is 15, we decided to have a budget of £20- £25 and everyone buys themselves a gift! These are all wrapped up in brown paper and put into an adult bag or child bag.
One adult and one child pick and unwrap a random gift and opposite teams vote as to whom the present belongs to. If they guess correctly, person stands up and collects their gift. If not they have to guess again. Each wrong guess it's a point against the team and you can keep individual points too for whu takes most guesses. Once one is guessed you swap teams and so on. It is a very long and fun game and some go for obvious gifts( I chose my favourite perfume as that is what I needed but none of the kids knew or had heard of it so it could have been any of the females) One of my nephew's bought a mail varnish set and we did rumble him quite quickly as it was not really something the girls would have purchased. He took a risk for the competition and forfeit a decent gift that he might have actually wanted but it was funny. My youngest daughter had bought a t-shirt with a Michelangelo scene with a Pokémon in it and she won as no one guessed it was her.
Also no worries about buying gifts that someone will not want.
