What do I buy new dp who is 10 trillion times wealthier than me and who probably doesn't get 'fun and quirky' in the way I might do? E.g. home made mince pies in a box coloured in by the dc wouldn't cut it.... neither would a stocking from Hawkin. Sadly I can't afford the £800 phone I know he likes and I am so, sooooo stuck for ideas.

What about something personalised? I got my ex (regret it now, but hey!) a hunting knife, it wasn't dear, (he was into outdoor stuff) and got it engraved with his initials in a shoe repair shop.
They'll engrave anything metal or even wood, I think. Does he drink, smoke...hip flask, or lighter, maybe?

TwinklyfLightAttendant · 10/12/2007 09:29

Ooh whiskey is better idea. And yes, don't try and compete with money.

dividedselfridgesxmaswindow · 10/12/2007 09:29

I know. I accept there is no way I could or would even want to keep up in that way but it is there and so makes it all that little bit more difficult.

I AM quite proud of our cheap. quirky, rough round the edges-ness in a way!

I think personal is the way to go, if you can't do fun and quirky or mega expensive. Could you do the whiskey with a nice glass or hip flask to go with it?

BettySpaghetti · 10/12/2007 09:34

Is he a gadgety sort of bloke?

These Leatherman tools are popular and good quality. Loads to choose from so you can get one that adapts to his interests or hobbies

CloudAtlas · 10/12/2007 09:37

what does he do? Does he need cufflinks of anything like that? My DH reckons that Simon Carter is fab for watches, cufflinks etc, but he has to wear city suits for work. I got him the egg cufflinks for £25, then perhaps you could go the home made presentation mince pies route aswell.
Whatever you do, he won't expect you to spend a lot of money, he is obviously interested in you for who you are, not how rich you are, but it's a toughie isn't it?!

amidaiwish · 10/12/2007 10:08

give us some clues:
is he sporty? (gym kit / Nike dri-fit top etc.)
golf? cyclist?

how much roughly do you want to spend?

is he into good food? (tasty treats from Carluccios?...)

games for game console?

Subscription to a magazine: Stuff, PCPro, Men's Health - all pressies for my difficult to buy for BILs which always go down well

dividedselfridgesxmaswindow · 10/12/2007 11:09

Thanks so much!

Ok, he is into food and drink (white rather than red and not spirits) he likes cars I guess since he has a Porsche, (does that mean he is 'into' cars d'you think?)

Doesn't have a games console unfortunately but has talked about getting a wii for my children...

He would like cufflinks, maybe a nice clothing item such as (non xmas rofl) jumper...is that too comfy coupley?

Not especially into sports but he does run and i'm trying to get him to see the need for proper walking gear if you go walking (he's poncey southerner to my having lived in the fells for years and years you see!).

This is getting me thinking now.

I think a jumper is a lovely lovely present. What's your budget? The wine thing is a good steer, bt need to know budget before start posting silly ideas, also is London accessible? Maybe you could get him a wine tasting course, OH has recommended a couple of good ones to me, but they're not cheap.

Re jumpers, I really don't think you can go far wrong with Nicole Fahri, I bought OH a jumper from there last year for about £120.

amidaiwish · 10/12/2007 16:59

you could find out his favourite wine and then get a nice bottle of that plus some glasses designed for that wine, this is a good website www.wineware.co.uk_wineware

or proper walking gear is a fab idea (i am a poncey southerner too

allIWannaBeForChristmas · 10/12/2007 17:05

sign him up to a wine club ie sunday times/virgin and order a case as part of the signing up.

pinetreedog · 10/12/2007 17:11

a new partner?

Underwear. His n hers

fridayschild · 10/12/2007 17:54

There is a Porsche Design shop on New Bond Street where they sell, erm, Porsche accessories. Heavy on wallets, hip flasks etc, but a couple of years ago I got DS a long sleeved navy t-shirt with "Porsche" also in navy down the arm of one sleeve, which he thought was quite classy. You can also get these from your local handy Porsche dealership, but the shop has a wider range.

Waiting list for tickets for the Top Gear audience? This is free but I think the waiting list is about 3 years long.

High-vis running top or gloves to keep him safe running in the dark in winter?

dividedselfridgesxmaswindow · 11/12/2007 13:32

Thank you, thank you!

On the jumpers front, where can I buy nice (not mega expensive, but designer/quality) jumpers online?

mummypig · 11/12/2007 13:52

hi dress for less does designer clothes at reasonable prices. I have bought dp stuff from there before. He sounds similar to your new partner, but minus the Porsche so perhaps not quite as loaded! He is the kind of person who just goes out and buys whatever he feels like whenever he thinks of it, leaving nothing for me to get him as presents. When I or the rest of the family ask what he wants, he just says the standard 'cufflinks', 'books', 'new shirts' mantra as they are all boring things he doesn't usually bother buying for himself! This year he has asked me to 'surprise him'... as if I have time to think of surprises! His sister has already got him a subscription to Stuff magazine which is a great idea, wish I'd thought of it first.

here's the link anyway

No Nicole Farhi jumpers though.

mummypig · 11/12/2007 13:53

p.s. I think the Top Gear waiting list thing sounds great, might look into that one!
