What Christmassy things would you recommend taking the kids to see in London?

...as I haven't been since I was a child and Selfridges windows were the big draw (along with the Oxford Street/Regent Street lights).

Does anyone have some good suggestions for children aged 8,7 and 4?

TIA

Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park - free to get in if you're not ice-skating - it's a German-style Christmas market, funfair (with big wheel and carousel) and Santa's grotto - may be thinking of somewhere else but I think there may be real reindeer there too... we're going next week!

Echo Scottishmummy for Covent Garden, that's always lovely at this time of year, Gabriel's Wharf on the South Bank is also nice - I think (haven't been for a year or so but dd is now old enough to appreciate it!) that it's near to where the Frost Fair is on this coming weekend - it's brilliant!

Something I love doing (not so sure with children in tow, but it depends on their ages) is walking down Regent Street from Oxford Circus and looking at the Christmas Displays - Liberty is a good one and Hamleys is always wonderful.

Have a great time

don't go to hamleys it is an overpriced dingy dump these days.

go to Kew Gardens, it's always magical, especially as it gets darker ...

We're going to London (with ds1 -3.9 and ds2 6 weeks) on sun and heading to the Science museum and maybe Natural history (FREE) (Hoping it will be quite for the first time ever as everyone else will be christmas shopping!) we're then off to see the lights down oxford/regent street and look at the window displays in all the 'posh' shops. (FREE) We're staying over in a hotel (quite a nice one as we haven't had a holiday this year with the kids) Going to see Father Christmas in Harrods (FREE) on Mon morn, popping into dh's work where they are going to make an identity badge for ds1 -he's 3 and DESPERATE to see where daddy works. Then Hyde park for the Winter wonderland thing and then home.

Mostly all free but very exciting when you're 3

We're NOT going anywhere near Hamley's!!!!!!!!!!
My friend went to London last weekend and they were queuing just to get in the shop!

MerryAnnSinglemas · 10/12/2007 11:17

kids are free in Kew (under 16s) by the way, though you'd have to pay for carousel

QuintessentialShadowOfYuleTide · 10/12/2007 11:24

We went to see Jack and the Beanstalk at Barbican Theatre on friday, and it was truly captivating. (We were lucky, got free tickets throgh some connections)

I second the suggestion of Kew.
