Advent calendar as gift

Has anyone done this ?
Our parents / aunts are notoriously difficult to buy for and I thought this year I could do this
A coffee one - a posh choc one - a beauty one for my knackered sister in law. The radio one for my Dad / FIL
Did they like it or did they think it was a bit weird ?
I thought they could think of us every day than just at Xmas when they might forget what we gave them

They can be nice if people are into them but if not then it is 24 days of crap presents! Personally I would be annoyed, but I can't speak for everyone. But I feel I am drowning in stuff and this is just yet more stuff.

I don't get the bit about people thinking of you every day, that seems unnecessary.

I would love that as a gift

Sounds a thoughtful and nice idea, I'd say!

Along similar lines, last year I bought this 'pop-and-slot' advent calendar for dog fanatic elderly Aunt.

Who always insists she doesn't want me spending money on proper gifts/is always overwhelmed by others' lorryloads of presents on Christmas Day itself etc. etc.

I thought she'd enjoy the simple, quiet process of adding a piece per day (bonus: reusable year after year).

Kind of backfired, though, as she interpreted it as a gift FOR her dogs...

Would only get high end ones and on things they really like.
Sadly we are in touch as families daily if not more via whatapp so the daily thing isn't weird for us although I'm sure for others 😂
@AutumnalLeaves38 your aunt sounds like my aunt in law who I love and adore. She's so generous but insists we never get anything (obviously we do) but I'm sure she would appreciate a posh truffle a day

Yes!

I am doing this for the first time this year for the in laws.
Every year we end up getting them their preferred alcohol and a couple of personalised bits from dc. When I ask I'm told slippers 😂

They don't know yet but I like this as it's a bit different and something for every day for 3 weeks- I want one good coffee one but not sure about the other. I was hoping to get different ones of things they both like so they can swap some days!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 13/10/2021 22:46

@brightwhite - yes in laws are getting them !

Every year father in law gets socks - Because that's what we asks for. We get him happy socks which he likes but even they are running out of options that he doesn't already have

I have done this in the past, for someone who has a birthday on Christmas Eve and for someone who was unavoidable away over Christmas. I made sure they had the calendars by 1st December and that everything was very tailored to their likes. I also made sure that there was something to open on Christmas Day that was still keeping to the theme, but a little bit more special. Both recipients really lo end the idea and one has mentioned how appreciative they would be if I ever decided to repeat the idea. As long as you think and plan carefully for the individual, I think they are a lovely idea.

I have done it in the past. There is a chance they will consider it wasteful but will probably love it.

Lovemusic33 · 14/10/2021 08:38

I think it’s a great idea

Kyliealwayshadthebestdisco · 17/10/2021 00:27

I’ve thought about this for myself! Like my parents asked me what I wanted one year and I thought actually what I’d probably most like is one of the ESPA or Elemis advent calendars. I love both brands. Unfortunately I am a ditherer and by the time I’d decided that’s what I’d most like they’d sold out! I don’t mind if it’s used as an advent calendar or given to me as one big gift on Christmas Day even though that’s not how it’s intended, it’s just such a good collection of stuff for the price, but too pricey to justify buying for myself.

It wasn't my only present from her, but at the end of November last year, my DD gave me a l'Occitane advent calendar. I loved it!

But I'm very much a budget toiletries person, and don't treat myself to nice stuff. So for me, it was a real treat to open a door each day and get something significant and nice.

(I recognise from the Advent calendar thread that l'Occitane is very 'low rent' for most MNers though! Grin )
