Mp3 player with Wi-Fi but not like a phone?

This could be for me or, actually, DS might like it.
I want something I can lIsten to music and podcasts in bed that is not a phone so I can't go on social media all the time instead of winding down.
DS gets travel sick and would just try and go on the screen if he had a tablet in the car or on the train but he also likes to listen to music and stories.
I don't want to have to plug it in to update all the time though.

We used a Bluetooth speaker so that we could keep the phone away and listen to stories, podcasts, music and dance what not on YouTube.

We also do the same thing for our son at bedtime, I ended up recording a whole raft of books on the recommendation of my wife for him to listen to my voice reading to him as he falls to sleep after his bedtime story.

You just have to be strong enough not to go on social media when you are starting to listen to stuff Smile

I'm not strong enough!
DS has a Google speaker but this is for on the go (car, train etc).

Have a look at Sony walkmans. Don't know if they have Bluetooth, they provide do.

Petrarkanian · 12/10/2021 21:59

Probably

HalzTangz · 12/10/2021 22:04

I'd get a Google or Alexa smart speaker with display. Can listen to music and podcasts. Can watch you tube, can follow cooking recipes etc

drspouse · 12/10/2021 22:29

I don't want to watch anything. Or be able to. Just to upload music and podcasts and then listen to them on earphones.
DS needs something with no screen for journeys so he doesn't get car sick.

Would it work to have an iPod, but with Bluetooth headphones, so he can listen but you keep hold of the iPod?

Ooh pricey but that fits the bill! I will definitely put that on my Christmas possibles list.
DS might need to have something wired in case he breaks it!

blue tooth headphones with storage so you can download to them

They would probably be a bit big for DS - maybe when he's older though. He's quite a small 9.

There was a v similar thread earlier this year - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4198889-Talk-to-me-about-MP3-players

It’s a really tricky one. I had the sandisk players for the kids when they were little, but you have to plug them in. It’s v hard to get something that has enough wireless connection to download what you want, but not enough to browse online!

drspouse · 12/10/2021 23:34

The Mighty player on the other thread syncs via Bluetooth so that could work.

I was going to suggest Bluetooth headphones for your DS. When my DS was younger we would stream audio books from my phone to his headphones This would work with music streaming and kids podcasts.

I have an old tablet that I use, which has no social media apps on - would a cheap tablet/Amazon fire tablet work for you?

drspouse · 13/10/2021 14:25

I think an MP3 player would work better for me.

For DS, if I was in the car with him he could listen to something that was on my phone - but then if my phone plays an ad by mistake or I get a phone call, he gets the audio! He may be going to school by taxi also and obviously then I wouldn't be with him. He is quite capable of spending 20 minutes rearranging icons/trying to delete things/trying to get into the app store so anything with a screen that he has would induce travel sickness owing to his inability to stay off the screen. So either an MP3 player that doesn't have a screen, or headphones that have storage.

Not Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and at that price I'm not confident they'd work either!

I let my DS wear my over ear headphones on the walk to school to listen to audio books and music which I play via Bluetooth on my phone (I have hearing loss and can't hear him for a big stretch of the walk when we are walking alongside traffic). I noticed my headphones have an SD card slot, so you can use it like an MP3 player I guess. You'd need a computer or an SD card reader for your phone to load stuff on (they are cheap) rather than add stuff online but I think that is the only way with MP3's. You can also play radio through my headphones too. They are just £20 Bluetooth ones from Amazon.

drspouse · 16/10/2021 08:12

Oh that could work for DS, yes!

My children have child sized over ear headphones with Sd cards and blue tooth capability. My DH bought them so I’m not sure where they’re from but they do exist!

We have a Yoto player, it's fantastic!
