British cheeseboard

Last year we had a lovely west county cheese hamper sent for our Christmas cheeseboard, and it inspired me to try and find some local British cheeses for this year too.

I'd love to do a "4 nations" cheeseboard with English, Scottish, N Irish and Welsh cheese.
One cheese from each nation, a hard, a soft, a blue and one other (maybe smoked).

Which are the best cheeses local to you? I'd love names of actual cheese makers rather than just cheese varieties.

Berkswell cheese. Unpasteurised ewes milk hard cheese. Exceptionally yummy.

Anster a delicious hard crumbly cows milk cheese (Scottish)

Pitchfork cheddar (English)

Golden Cenarth (Welsh)

All outstanding and regular dinner party favourites here. Sorry no idea about a northern Irish cheese.

Somerset brie

Sharpham blue - South hams Devon

Hdhdjejdj · 07/10/2021 21:16

I like Snowdonia cheeses. Mrs. Kirkham’s also recommended.

PurpleDaisies · 07/10/2021 21:16

Just about to recommend the snowdonia cheeses.

Babdoc · 07/10/2021 21:18

Dovedale blue, from the Hartington cheese shop online, is a gorgeous mild blue cheese.
I order one every Christmas as a treat, as I much prefer it to Stilton.

DotBall · 07/10/2021 21:18

Snowdonia Black Bomber
Cornish Yarg
Parlick Fell sheep cheese

goose1964 · 07/10/2021 21:21

Quickes or Keens cheddar, and I can recommend the buffalo and sheep's milk cheese from here www.somersetcheese.co.uk/product/the-party-box/

NotMeNoNo · 07/10/2021 21:23

Sparkenhoe Red Leicester, they also do a blue cheese. Or a Long Clawson Stilton (much bigger operation but good cheese all the same)

Cheshire Cheese Company truffle truckle would be a touch of luxury for a cheese board. Also Shorrock’s Dairy Lancashire cheese is highly recommended.

More votes for Snowdonia Cheeses too.

CRbear · 07/10/2021 21:52

Baron Bigod from Suffolk - Brie/Camembert like but with so much taste! And another vote for black bomber cheddar

bigbeautwoman · 07/10/2021 21:55

Do you have a farmers marker or similar close by? Always worth going and trying some

nocoolnamesleft · 07/10/2021 21:58

Get a Shorrock's Lancashire Bomb. Amazing.

Hdhdjejdj · 07/10/2021 22:04

Glad to see so many fellow Snowdonia cheese lovers here.

liveforsummer · 07/10/2021 22:16

Orkney smoked cheddar from the island smokery is divine

agnesmartin · 07/10/2021 22:21

Mull cheddar is probably our favourite. Nice and sharp. www.sgriobruadh.co.uk/shop

FireworkParrot · 07/10/2021 22:22

Garstang Blue from Dewlay in Lancashire

I also LOVE the stuffing cheese from The Cheese Wedge Company in Shropshire. A hard cheese with sage and onion stuffing in it, it would be amazing on a toastie with leftover turkey.

MrsMoastyToasty · 07/10/2021 22:24

Isle of Mull cheeses are lovely. They're made with unpasteurised rather than pasteurised milk.

EerilyDisembodied · 07/10/2021 22:26

Tunworth soft rinded cheese from Hampshire, looks like Camembert but much stronger, fabulous flavour.

Agree also about Snowdonia Cheeses and Lancashire Bomb.

SoftSheen · 07/10/2021 22:28

Cornish Yarg (I'm not from Cornwall, but this is a lovely cheese that I always buy at Christmas)

Tunworth is the dogs bollocks. I'm also very fond of Stichelton (like stilton but made with unpasteurised milk) and Lincolnshire Poacher.
FedUpWithBriiiiick · 07/10/2021 22:38

For NI cheese, try Mike's Fancy Cheese Young Buck, if you can get hold of it. Kearney Blue is also good.

Gorwydd Caerphilly is gorgeous. Tbh, I'd just ring up the Courtyard Dairy near Settle and ask them to put one together Grin
